Britains Oldest Mums

Sunday, March 20, 2011
Pamela Butler, surrogate mum at 57PAMELA Butler may be the UK’s oldest surrogate mum but she’s not the first to help out a daughter.

Cases of daughters asking their mums to become surrogates are rare, but in 2001 Vivien Morris, 54, gave birth to her own grand-daughter.

Her daughter Laura Westrop, 29, was unable to carry a baby after treatment for cervical cancer. So Vivien, a playgroup worker from London, volunteered to help Laura and her husband Mark.

In 2005, 53-year-old Annie Casserley gave birth for her daughter Emma Hattersley, who was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer when she was 19, and son-in-law Andrew.

Liz Buttle, from near Lampeter in West Wales, became the UK’s oldest mum at 60 when she gave birth to a son called Joseph in 1997. She now lives in Ireland.

Elizabeth Adeney of Lidgate, Suffolk, is Britain’s oldest mum after giving birth to a boy in May 2009, aged 66.

Karen Johnston, 54, gave birth to twins

Sunday, October 10, 2010
Karen Johnston, 54, gave birth to twins 'I went through the menopause six years ago and was too old for fertility treatment in the UK '

Karen Johnston, 54, gave birth to twins Asa and Imogen 13 weeks prematurely in March. She lives in Bicester, Oxfordshire, with husband Roger, 55, a former Army sergeant who now works for a car manufacturer. The couple have eight other children — Daniel, 33, Jemma, 28, Scott, 27, Amy, 26, Aiden, 17, Bethany, 14, Joseph, 13, and Willow, two. Karen says:

Having had children in my 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s, I honestly think the best age is your 30s.

In my 20s I felt torn between my children and wanting to socialise and have fun, but once I got to my mid-30s and beyond I became more relaxed and patient and didn’t care about nights out any more.

All I’ve ever wanted is lots of babies. But had I looked like an old lady and been in poor health there’s no way I’d have continued having them into my 50s.

For your children’s sake you’ve got to have the energy and good health to do all the things that younger mums do with their kids.

I don’t feel any different to when I was in my 30s — just 3st heavier.

I had my first baby with Roger when I was 20, but I think that’s too young now and I’d be mortified if any of my children had babies at that age — my first grandchild was born to my eldest son, 33, this month.

In my generation girls left school, got a little job, then got married and had children.

But the younger generation today have so many opportunities to travel and have fun, they should enjoy themselves and mature before having kids.

I suffered three miscarriages after my fourth child, Amy, before then having Aiden, Bethany and Joseph. Two more miscarriages followed and we decided to stop trying.

I went through the menopause six years ago and was too old for fertility treatment in the UK.

But in 2007 I read about a 63-year-old British woman having fertility treatment abroad and my broodiness returned.

So Roger and I flew to the Czech Republic for IVF using donor eggs and conceived Willow. We did the same last year to conceive Imogen and Asa, at a total cost of £6,000 for the two separate treatments.

Before we went for fertility treatment I calculated that I should have at least 25 years of my life left to raise and care for another child, and since Roger and I had the money and support network to make it possible I thought, why not go for it?

Whatever happens I know I have a loving, strong family who will be there for each other. I wouldn’t change anything for the world.

My babies keep me young and I’ve got the advantage of three teenagers to help.

Having children is a privilege and it gives me a sense of purpose.

There have been people over the years who’ve told me I should stop trying for more children, which made me angry. I couldn’t help my maternal feelings, though I almost died when I had the twins seven months ago.

They had to be induced three months early when I developed pre-eclampsia — a complication that can be dangerous to both mum and baby.

I wouldn’t recommend that women choose to wait until my age to have children. If they’ve met the right person I’d urge them to get on with it in their 30s.

We won’t be having any more. The twins were the perfect way to bow out of childbirth.

Woman gives birth at 54 years-old

Saturday, November 21, 2009
Woman gives birth at 54 years-oldA Ugandan woman has given birth at the age of 54, ten years after reaching menopause. The woman, a university lecturer, delivered a baby boy at the Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre in Kampala on Thursday last week.

The baby boy is fondly known as Baby Precious. He weighed 3.1kg at birth which doctors said was a normal weight. He has been breastfeeding.

"I am ecstatic. I feel excited.I turned 54 the day I had him. We will have two birthdays to celebrate on the same day,” said the mother, who protected her identity to safeguard her child from unnecessary stigmatization when he grows up.

Arcelia Garcia, 54, Gives Birth to 3 Healthy Girls

Monday, July 20, 2009
Arcelia Garcia, a 54-Year-Old Grandmother, Gives Birth to Three Healthy GirlsJanuary 24, 2000 - When 54-year-old Arcelia Garcia began feeling tired last summer, she was running a schedule that would have put a woman half her age to shame. Yet she was troubled enough by her unexpected fatigue to take time out to visit her doctor.

Boy, was she in for a surprise. Not only was Garcia two months pregnant—she was carrying triplets. "The news came like a bright star," says Garcia, whose other children range in age from 16 to 35. "To have a child is so wonderful; you never feel like you're too old."

Her pregnancy stunned fertility experts for two reasons: The average age of menopause is 51, and triplets occur in just one of every 8,000 pregnancies. "The probability of someone over 50 having triplets is one in a million," says Dr. Larry Shields, a perinatal specialist at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Why Have a Baby After 50?

Friday, July 10, 2009
The author and her son Harper, channeling their inner cowpoke outside a lodge she owns in Stanley, Idaho.I opened my post office box and removed an AARP magazine, a La Leche League newsletter, and a postcard of a pagoda in Myanmar, which I'd mailed to myself two weeks earlier while on assignment in the country formerly known as Burma. The Idaho mountain morning was autumn orange, my first at home after 24 sleepless hours flying economy class from Yangon. My baby screamed whenever the stroller stopped rocking, and the early miseries of a cold pounded in my head.

I am 54 years old and suffering the delirious consequences of weaning a baby and being one of the first Western journalists to visit Naypyidaw, the new capital city of the military dictatorship that has held the Nobel Peace Prize-winner Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest for much of the past 18 years. No doubt, I am also the first breastfeeding 54-year-old journalist to go this route. (No, I didn't take my son with me: Myanmar, military dictators, and babies really don't mix.) But today, deadlines looming and baby wailing as if his hair is on fire, I choose to blame my entire exhausted life on the airline's lack of business-class upgrades and on Mary Martin.

Valley Stream woman gives birth to twins at 53

Monday, June 22, 2009
Sarajean Grainson, 54 with twinsEven if the two digits - 54 - were reversed, Sarajean Grainson would be considered an older mom. But she'll turn 54 in July, and last month the Valley Stream woman gave birth to fraternal twins Matthew and David.

It's not so shocking anymore for a woman in her 50s to have a newborn. But the Grainson clan gathered for a news conference Thursday at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, where the twins were born, because Grainson said she wanted to inspire women not to give up on the dream of carrying a baby.

"I want women to know there is no biological clock. . . . It's not ticking anymore," Grainson said. A doctor brought Grainson out of menopause and combined donor eggs with her husband's sperm.

Grainson plans to stay home full-time; she joked that while other women jump from planes or go to the Caribbean in retirement, she'll joyfully spend hers raising children.

Time to update our over 40 Birth Statistics Quote

Wednesday, March 25, 2009
It's time to update this quote:

"In 2005, there were more than 104,000 births in the United States to women ages 40 through 44, and over 6,500 to women 45 and older. In 2004, there were 1,786 live births to women over 42, using donor eggs."

Checking the 2007 birth stats today at the CDC and I found:
All races and origins
40–44 years................. 105,071 live births
45–54 years................ 7,349 live births

Next I went to SART, who has the 2007 IVF and Donor Egg rates in the US:

Fresh Embryos From Non-Donor Oocytes
Number of cycles : (40-42) 8,865 (43-44) 5,749
Percentage of cycles resulting in live births : (40-42) 11.7 (43-44) 4.6
Total live births : (40-42) 1,037.2 (43-44) 264.5

TOTAL (40-44) : 1,301.7

Thawed Embryos From Non-Donor Oocytes
Number of transfers : (40-42) 1,043 (43-44) 652
Percentage of transfers resulting in live births : (40-42) 20.7 (43-44) 14.6
Total live births : (40-42) 215.9 ( 43-44) 95.2

TOTAL (40-44) : 311

Total number of women conceiving from IVF (non-DE) (40-44) : 1,613

Donor Oocytes (all ages)
Number of transfers : (Fresh Embryos) 9,575 (Thawed Embryos) 5,087
Percentage of transfers resulting in live births : (Fresh) 55.2 (Thawed) 31.7
Total Live Births : (Fresh) 5,285.4 (Thawed) 1612.6

TOTAL births by Donor Egg (all ages) : 6,898

Number of live-birth deliveries resulting from ART cycles started in 2006: 41,343

How old were the women who used ART in the United States in 2006?
Figure 3: The average age of women using ART services in 2006 was 36. The largest group of women using ART services were women younger than 35, representing 39% of all ART cycles carried out in 2006. Twenty-three percent of ART cycles were carried out among women aged 35–37, 19% among women aged 38–40, 10% among women aged 41–42, and 10% among women older than 42.

Number of live-birth deliveries to women using ART older than 42 in 2007: 4,134

How did the types of ART cycles used in the United States in 2006 differ among women of different ages?
Figure 4 shows that, in 2006, the type of ART cycles varied by the woman’s age. The vast majority (96%) of women younger than 35 used their own eggs, whereas only 4% used donor eggs. In contrast, 21% of women aged 41 to 42 and more than half (55%) of women older than 42 used donor eggs. Across all age groups, more ART cycles using fresh eggs or embryos were performed than cycles using frozen embryos.

Number of live-birth deliveries to women using Donor Egg older than 42 in 2004: 2,274

So the updated quote becomes:
"In 2007, there were more than 105,000 births in the United States to women ages 40 through 44, and over 7,349 to women 45 to 54. In 2007, there were 2,274 live births to women over 42, using donor eggs."

I will be 56 when this baby is born

Saturday, June 21, 2008
Hello all, My name is Lisa, and I am 55 years old. I needed to join this board because, I really hope to be an inspiration for women trying to conceive at later ages.

Two weeks ago, I found out that I am expecting my sixth child and I am now at 8 weeks. I went in to see my doctor because I had not been feeling well. I was getting frequent headaches and lower back pain, along with some queasiness.

So I went in to make sure things were ok, and my doctor told me that I was actually expecting! I will be 56 when this baby is born, and I do plan to have a natural birth.

I have four older children ages 17, 23, 26, and 28, and I have a five year old. My five year old was actually planned. My husband and I had wanted one more little one. But I guess she was not supposed to be the last!

I also have two grandchildren. My 28 year old daughter has a four year old, and she and I were both preggo around the same time, which was pretty exciting. And my 26 year old son has a three year old. So I am a grandmother as well.

I have seen a few others on this board expecting after 50, and I hope that if anyone out there is trying to conceive at an older age, that they do not give up! And congrats to all the expectant mothers out there!

4553~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Congrats on your new found pregnancy! I am also in my fifties (54), and expecting my fourth in late July. I have a 16 year old, a 20 year old and a 26 year old.

And I too have two grandchildren! It's is always exciting to hear stories that I can relate to, and hopefully be an encouragement! I wish you luck, and I will keep you in my prayers!

Dr informed her she was 7m pregnant at 54

Thursday, June 19, 2008
I found this at Fertile Heart today:

DON'T LOSE HOPE! Here's a great story from an autobiography called Because They Hate, by Brigitte Gabriel. On page 4 of the book, Gabriel says her parents tried for twenty years to have a child.

One day her mother noticed a swelling in her abdomen and feared it was a tumor. The doctor informed her she was 7 months pregnant! She was 54 years old. Her husband was 60.

Oldest woman on this board had natural oops at 48

Sunday, June 15, 2008
I had my first (and only so far) at 43.

I'm 47 now and TTC (trying to conceive) number two. My theory has always been that we'll keep trying until "the last egg drops."

And based on my older sisters, I have until at least age 54.

4541~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I have been posting on this board for years since my last successful "over 40" pregnancy, and I must say there have been plenty of moms 44+ so do not give up hope.

The oldest woman on this board had a natural "oops" at 48!! She delivered a healthy baby boy.

I'm 49, my daughter is 14 months

Saturday, June 7, 2008
I'm 49 and my daughter, Lecia is 14 months. I needed a lot of help to have her!!! I found a doctor that was willing to work with me, and just a year later I had a beautiful girl.

My husband and I have been together almost 17 years, and married almost 10. I have 2 older stepsons 26 and 20. The 20 year old still lives at home, and is a wonderful big brother.

I was actively involved in the boys' raising. I was in my 30's then. I am a very relaxed first time mom, and really, really enjoy every second of Lecia's life.

4527~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I was talking to a girl (21 years old), and she said she still lived at home with her brother who was 6 years old while she is studying in a community college. Her parents are 60 years old.

Believe me, they never heard the word donor eggs. I made her repeat the story a few times to make sure she understood the math. It's true.

His wife in mid 50's with last child

Tuesday, May 27, 2008
What about countries in the Caribbean where ART [assisted reproductive technologies] is non-existant for the most part, and women continuously have children with their own eggs well over 40 and 50? My own grandpa had his last child at 80 with his wife, who was in her mid 50's. I mean, my grandpa and his wife doing IVF [in vitro fertilization] ? That's a laugh and with DE [donor egg] to boot?

She wouldn't even know what the heck a DE was. I mean, these people ran a farm. And her 3 other kids were definitely under 10 in a picture that I have of them all. That woman started having kids in her 40's.

4305~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I just had to say, my cousin is 42 and pregnant. Well, she called me yesterday, and her sister is pregnant too!! She is 47 years old.

So my 42 year old cousin is due: October 7 or 8.

And my 47 year old cousin due........... AUGUST 27. Stinker waited to tell us!!!

We shouldn't assume every older mother did DE

Monday, May 26, 2008
We shouldn't be making assumptions that every older mother did donor egg, nor should we put too much hope in stories of much older women conceiving with their own eggs.

Look at the trends, and make your own decision about how long you want to fight the trend by trying with your own eggs, vs. deciding that the time has come to accept that the odds are just so stacked against you that you must move on to other alternatives.

Remember, too, that is really is not all "age related." I apparently lost my egg quality in my late 20's, as do some women. Others retain their fertility into their 50's.

An Israeli RE [reproductive endocrinologist] named Neri Laufer just discovered a gene in certain women that corresponds to later fertility. He was fascinated by the number of older pregnant women coming into the hospital for delivery.

You can google his name if you want to read about it. His group included women up into their early 50's. So much for any stats showing that NO women conceive in this age group!

4503~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

For those who just can't let go of the belief that all pregnant women over 45 must have used donor eggs, consider the population that Laufer studied. These were mostly, if not all, ultra-religious women for whom DE [donor eggs] would have been prohibited.

Imagine you have 10 kids already, you're living on government assistance and still exist below the poverty line, donor egg is not offered in your country, and your religious leader forbids the procedure anyway.

Now you tell me -- all these women secretly squirreled away thousands of dollars, disappeared from their communities for a couple of weeks to go to the Ukraine, defied their religious teachings, all in an effort to get pregnant with baby #11? Use your common sense!

The same can be applied to the Native American women living on reservations. Many have a lot of kids already and can't afford groceries let alone donor egg IVF cycles. The problem with middle and upper class American women like us is that we think we are representative of every group (and our RE's [reproductive endocrinologist] promote that thinking too, because they are victims of the same egocentric system).

If it becomes impossible for us to conceive after age 43, well, then, that must be true of everyone. Only it's not true. It's really not even true for our demographic.

RE's choose to present certain information based on the context. When they are counseling a 40 yr old with high FSH [follicle stimulating hormone] about her treatment options, of course they are going to highlight fertility trends in the general population and the success rates of certain treatment options because this is what is relevant to her. The goal is to get her a baby, not turn her into a rare statistic.

She has to make an informed decision based on medical facts as to what will give her the best odds of success. After age 40 and with high FSH, that's donor egg.

But if you ask that same doctor in another context, say, a conversational context, about much older women conceiving, he will concede that yes, it is absolutely possible and does happen, though not as often as we would like.

If he subscribes to the notion that no women get pregnant naturally after 45, then he's an idiot and you should get another doctor -- it means he's not up on basic information in his field.

This was her first baby at 48

Wednesday, May 7, 2008
Today I had the privilege to care for a mom who was 48 year young. She looked incredible and this was her first baby. She said she had decided to get very fit, and then she discovered she was pregnant. She did not have any issues with her pregnancy, and she has a beautiful baby girl.

It was so nice to see this, believe me I felt much more secure knowing she was raising a child than I did with the 16 year old mom down the hall. Older mom's may get a lot of slack, but let's face it they are better prepared to be moms.

4416~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I have heard stories of even spontaneous people getting pregnant from my friends and relatives, but I never met the ladies personally.

I practice NFP [natural family planning] . I am 50 myself, and would like another blessing.

My NFP instructor (who is also a nurse) said she had a lady age 50 deliver several years ago her 7th child, very healthy baby girl. This one I trust the most as it was told me by a medical professional (spontaneous pregnancy), so the age would be right.

4417~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My friend said she used to live in these apartments with an elderly lady a few years ago - the elderly lady's niece gave birth to twins at age 54 - the elderly who was about 80 something, and she thought it was spontaneous as they had older children, but could have been DE [donor egg]. Babies were both healthy.

4418~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My Dad (aged 85) remembers a neighbour lady having a child in her early 50's when he was a child (this would have been in the 1930's before DE [donor egg] )

4419~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My mother-in-law remembered a former neighbour of hers having a baby at 50 - this woman and her (older) daughter were pregnant at the same time.

Gran's a mum again at 60!

Thursday, April 17, 2008
Photo by news.bbc.co.uknew mom at 54 or 60?
A grandmother looks set to enter the record books as Britain's oldest mother following the birth of a baby boy 35 years after her first child.

Welsh farmer Elizabeth Buttle, whose maiden name is Espley, is believed to be 60 years old.

If correct, the miracle mum's age would beat the previous record birth by five years.

Checks by one British news agency at the Family Records Centre in London revealed an Elizabeth Espley was born early in 1937 in the Chester area.

Further checks revealed no-one by the same name was born between 1937 and late 1945.

No fertility drugs

Twice-married Mrs Buttle, whose eldest grandson is 19, gave birth to new arrival Joseph David by Caesarian section at West Wales General Hospital in Carmarthen eight weeks ago.

The mother, who lives on her farm in the west Wales village of Cwmann, near Lampeter, became pregnant without the use of fertility drugs by her partner Peter Rawston, 56.

Talking about baby Joseph, Elizabeth says: "He is my little miracle and he makes me feel like a young woman again. I feel perfectly well and I don't know what the fuss is about.

"There were no complications and the hospital staff were absolutely marvellous."

"Baby was not planned"

A widow with three grandchildren, Mrs Buttle had a daughter in 1962 with her late husband Tom, who died 10 years ago.

New arrival Joseph, described by his mother as a "lovely, healthy little lad", was born slightly premature.

Elizabeth, who celebrates her birthday next month, said although the baby was not planned, she and her partner had taken no precautions to avoid the pregnancy.

Kathleen Campbell, of Ilkeston, Derbyshire, is entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest woman in the UK to give birth at the age of 55 in 1987.
