IVF helps 55-year-old give birth to a son

IVF helps 55-year-old give birth to a sonA 55-year-old woman from Dhule gave birth to a baby boy on Tuesday morning at the Origin Fertility Centre in Thane through in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Shobha Joshi and her husband Vidyadhar (54) had the baby after nearly 35 years of married life.

The couple from Dhule had come to Thane after seeing a newspaper article on Thane's first surrogate child.

The Joshi's made an arduous yet hopeful journey from Dhule to the fertility clinic at Hiranandani Meadows in August last year.

"When the couple approached us, we were in a dilemma because of the age factor. But at the same time, we saw their hope and determination. We conducted all the necessary tests," said Dr Sandeep Mane.

"Barring blood pressure, there was no other problem. We had to operate on her the very next day, because there was some abnormality in the cavity of her womb. We cleaned up the cavity through surgery and prepared it for in-vitro fertilization (IVF)."

The next part of the treatment took place in September 2009.

Since the Joshi's were not financially well-off, Dr Mane made arrangements for Shobha's stay at his parent's house in Dombivli.

The embryos were transferred into Shobha's womb in October. After two weeks, the pregnancy test showed positive results.

In November, an ultrasound scan was performed, which revealed a twin pregnancy.

"We were contemplating on whether to have twin pregnancies due to her age. But after a sonography was done in the later stage, it was found that only one baby showed growth. The next dilemma was whether to have a normal delivery or a caesarean," said Mane.

"We decided to have a caesarean keeping the health of the baby and mother in mind. It was only due to the couple's belief that the baby was born without any problems."

The Joshi's said that they are now truly satisfied and therefore have decided to name the baby Saarthak.

"We are fortunate to finally be called as a mother and a father. We always knew that we will have a baby after we came here," said Shobha.

Vidyadhar, a priest, said: "When my nephews and nieces were born, I was equally happy. But today even I am a father. I'll do everything to give my son a good upbringing."

For the love of kids

Monday, October 18, 2010
New Zealand's oldest mother, Lyn MasonNew Zealand's oldest mother, Lyn Mason, and her husband Ian tell Denise Irvine how they cope with their young family and other people's curiosity.

It's a few days before Celine Mason's birthday, and when asked what she'd like as a present, she replies promptly, "a little pony".

This is not of the four-legged, ride-on variety, but the brand of My Little Pony toys popular with girls, and Celine would like to add another one to her collection. She fishes in the toy cupboard and shows some of her favourites.

Big brother Dean, 8, had his birthday in July, and he got a Star Wars Lego set that he's obviously had hours of pleasure from.

Both the Mason kids have a light sabre, and they've recently been to a dress-up Star Wars disco at Hukanui Primary. "Some big people were dressed up in Star Wars costumes," says Dean. "They looked real."

Dean and Celine cuddle up to their mother Lyn for a photograph in their pleasant home in Hamilton's northern suburbs. The years since they were born seemed to have flashed by, and yesterday Celine celebrated her sixth birthday. There's nothing particularly remarkable about that. Except that Lyn was 55 when she gave birth to her daughter, and 53 when she had Dean.

Lyn made history as New Zealand's oldest mother, and both children were conceived by in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), with their father Ian's sperm and donor eggs from a family friend. Although several women overseas have been reported to have given birth in their 50s, 60s and 70s, to the best of everyone's knowledge, Lyn holds the New Zealand record.

55-year-old Woman Delivers Twins in India

Sunday, May 16, 2010
August 27, 2007 - For a long, long time she had been longing for a child. And menopause had overtaken her. Still she would not give up. She feels doubly rewarded now, literally.

On Monday morning, 55-year-old Brinda became the proud mother of two. Her twins were delivered at a fertility clinic in Chennai, a south Indian city. She is now probably the oldest woman in India to deliver twins.

Both the baby boys, delivered during hour-long caesarean section, and their proud mother are in good health, hospital authorities say.

Thursday, April 8, 2010
Marilyn Nolen, mom to twins at 55For Marilyn Nolen, parenting came a little later in life than she expected. With the help of assisted reproductive therapy (ART) and donor eggs, she finally became the proud mother of twin boys -- when she was 55 years old.

Now 65 and raising her two rambunctious ten-year-olds in Killeen, Tex., Nolen is one of a growing number of women in the U.S. who have entered motherhood post-40.

Women over 55 queuing at London clinics for IVF

Saturday, February 27, 2010
Older mother - Susan Tollefsen, from Essex, with her first child, daughter Freya who she had at the age of 57 at a Moscow clinicTwo women aged 58 are set to receive fertility treatment at a London clinic as record numbers attempt to become pregnant after the menopause.

The two patients are thought to be the oldest so far to seek IVF treatment after the medical centre changed its policy on older mothers.

One of those in contact with the London Women's Clinic has already been through seven failed IVF cycles. She is married and has no existing children.

Pauline Lyon, 63, mom to 7 & 11y olds

Friday, September 18, 2009
Stock photo by combine69
Pauline Lyon, 63, mom to 7 & 11y oldsPauline Lyon Age: 63. Mother of Brodie, seven, Lauren, 11, and Lisa, 36. She is married to David, 62

When David and I got married 16 years ago we immediately discussed having a baby to seal the marriage. I already had a child from a previous marriage and he had three. We tried to conceive naturally, but when nothing happened we underwent tests and decided to try IVF. It's very emotional and splits a lot of families up, but it brought us closer together. I was 51 when I had Lauren and 55 when I had Brodie. We went to two clinics in the UK. It took three attempts for both of them. We spent £7,500 on having Lauren and £11,000 on having Brodie, but you can't put a price on a baby.

People don't say anything now, but they did when we first had Lauren. Some were for it, some were against. There were one or two in the supermarket who thought I was Lauren's grandmother. It didn't bother me. You expect it really.

Lisa was a bit upset at first over Lauren. She was just stunned to think that her mum was pregnant at the age I was. But she gets on with them really well. I do all the things that other young mums do, such as the school run. Being older you have more patience and you're better off financially. Everything else is the same. You try to do the best for your children and give them the sort of things that you never had.

The only disadvantage to being an older mother is that you might not be around when they're grown up. It makes me feel awful really, but you can't dwell on it. We have made provisions for them. They both have bank accounts.

They know I'm older than other mums, I've told them, but children take that in their stride. It's not a problem for them. Lauren has said she does worry sometimes about her mum dying, but she hasn't spoken about it to me.

It's lovely to wake up to them every morning. Brodie especially is very affectionate. They come into my bed and we have cuddles and kisses. It's brilliant. I wouldn't be without them. Whatever we do, wherever we go, they're always with us. We never palm them off on other people. We like going to car boot sales, and I take them swimming occasionally and to the coast. We're like any other family.

I never feel tired. All the younger mums come up to school and stand there saying: "I'm knackered today." I never feel like that. I don't feel any different from when I was bringing up Lisa.

I'd have another one next week if we could afford it. Two years ago we went to Italy to see if the doctor who treated me would treat me again. He said he would, but then we had loads of tests and my blood pressure was a bit high. He said if I got it down, and it was OK for three months, he would treat us. But we've just moved house so it's on hold at the moment because of the cost. I gave up work in a circuit board factory a couple of years after I met David. I get a pension and family allowance now. David is unemployed at the moment. We'll try again if we can get the money together.

IVF mum, 55, reveals quadruplets joy

Wednesday, April 29, 2009
Dana Ramkissoon gave birth aged 55The world's oldest mother of quads told today how the babies brought joy at the end of a ten-year struggle to have children.

Dana Ramkissoon, 55, gave birth to four healthy boys in August thanks to fertility treatment.

The cleaner and her husband, Pabla Singh, 38, from Mantua, Italy, spent £10,000 on IVF [invitro fertilization] over ten years before a successful course of treatment in India.

The proud mother said: 'I'm glad we kept trying and never lost hope.'

Manav, Manmeet, Radvee and Roshan, now eight months old, were delivered by Caesarean section two months prematurely.

Mr Singh said: 'We are very, very happy. Having four babies is just an even bigger blessing.'

Indian woman, 55, has quadruplets in Italy

The feet of a set of quadruplets. A 55-year-old Indian woman has given birth to...ROME (AFP) - A 55-year-old Indian woman has given birth to quadruplets in the northern Italian city of Mantua, a local newspaper there reported Thursday.

The woman, who has lived in nearby Suzzara for 15 years, had gone home to India to be artificially inseminated after trying unsuccessfully in Italy, La Gazzetta di Mantova said.

"We have been waiting for this moment for 15 years," the babies' 38-year-old father Pabla Maghar Singh said. "We are really very happy."

The four boys, born a week ago, were named Manav, Manmeet, Roshan and Radveer.

They were born two months premature, weighing between 750 and 980 grammes (one pound, 10 ounces and two pounds, two ounces), and are in incubators at the hospital, but are doing well, the report said.

The mother works for a cleaning business, while the father is a metal worker.

I will be 56 when this baby is born

Saturday, June 21, 2008
Hello all, My name is Lisa, and I am 55 years old. I needed to join this board because, I really hope to be an inspiration for women trying to conceive at later ages.

Two weeks ago, I found out that I am expecting my sixth child and I am now at 8 weeks. I went in to see my doctor because I had not been feeling well. I was getting frequent headaches and lower back pain, along with some queasiness.

So I went in to make sure things were ok, and my doctor told me that I was actually expecting! I will be 56 when this baby is born, and I do plan to have a natural birth.

I have four older children ages 17, 23, 26, and 28, and I have a five year old. My five year old was actually planned. My husband and I had wanted one more little one. But I guess she was not supposed to be the last!

I also have two grandchildren. My 28 year old daughter has a four year old, and she and I were both preggo around the same time, which was pretty exciting. And my 26 year old son has a three year old. So I am a grandmother as well.

I have seen a few others on this board expecting after 50, and I hope that if anyone out there is trying to conceive at an older age, that they do not give up! And congrats to all the expectant mothers out there!

4553~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Congrats on your new found pregnancy! I am also in my fifties (54), and expecting my fourth in late July. I have a 16 year old, a 20 year old and a 26 year old.

And I too have two grandchildren! It's is always exciting to hear stories that I can relate to, and hopefully be an encouragement! I wish you luck, and I will keep you in my prayers!

Just got my BFP today & I'm 45

Wednesday, May 28, 2008
I just got my BFP [big fat positive - positive pregnancy test] today and I'm 45! This is my 4th pregnancy since I've been 43 1/2.

So, it definitely can be done. I'm hoping this one sticks.
-- Susan - trying for 1st at 45.

4507~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I had several RE [reproductive endocrinologist] consults recently and one of the RE's told me this story.

A woman came in to the emergency room complaining of a stomach flu. This RE was in residency and got her as a patient. Was real nervous because of being a newly minted doctor, but said her symptoms didn't present as stomach flu.

Put a hand on her stomach and felt something moving. Asked her if she could possibly be pregnant and she said no way - she was 52 (or 55 - I forget which) and had been in menopause for two years. RE decided it was best to take a look, just in case, and saw the baby's head! She was giving birth!

RE said it was a complete shock to her - she was a very large woman, so didn't notice the weight gain. She did have children, though, so it's not like she didn't know what pregnancy felt like. She just didn't put it all together in her head because she was in menopause.

RE said it was a pretty funny telephone call she had to make to her daughter. RE said would never forget that experience, and learned the value of never counting women out because of age or anything else.

His wife in mid 50's with last child

Tuesday, May 27, 2008
What about countries in the Caribbean where ART [assisted reproductive technologies] is non-existant for the most part, and women continuously have children with their own eggs well over 40 and 50? My own grandpa had his last child at 80 with his wife, who was in her mid 50's. I mean, my grandpa and his wife doing IVF [in vitro fertilization] ? That's a laugh and with DE [donor egg] to boot?

She wouldn't even know what the heck a DE was. I mean, these people ran a farm. And her 3 other kids were definitely under 10 in a picture that I have of them all. That woman started having kids in her 40's.

I am carrying a perfect, healthy baby at 55

Wednesday, May 21, 2008
I didn't wish to post an announcement too soon. As I have not had a normal menstrual cycle since March 2005, and I am 55.

I am carrying a perfect, healthy and active baby girl due in late September, conceived 100% naturally. (approx. EDD 9/29)

At 18 weeks along, I feel wonderful and we are just ecstatic. My youngest is turning 17 this month. I am planning a home birth, hopefully in a tub of warm of water.

I didn't do anything special to become pregnant, except apply The Secret ~~ the Universal Law of Attraction. My last confirmed pregnancy ended in miscarriage in December 02, and I had several "chemical pregnancies".....

My husband and I were TTC [trying to conceive] since 1998 -- while I never gave up, we did stop "trying".

I simply convinced myself that this baby was possible, and have been so grateful for her presence even before she was conceived. I will keep you updated. - Debbie

48 years old, trying and I'm 5 days late. Just to let you know that today I toke another pregnancy test and it was positive. But I'll still want my doctor to do another test on Tuesday.- Lolly

4487~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I was 42 at the birth of my first child, and 45 at the second. I have 2 girls -Grace 4 and Isabella 18 months. Never regretted it once.

4888~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

At 46 I found my soul mate, and on December 25 2006 I got "knocked up" the old fashioned way. Both he and I had given up on finding someone, not to mention babies. This is my first.

4489~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I was in your shoes last year. I was 43 and pregnant with our 4th. My youngest was 10. I, however was the one who was unhappy and worried about the pregnancy. I dreaded the thought of having a baby. It took me a very long time to get used to being pregnant. I had to deal with many different feelings. I hoped it would go away, but it wouldn't.

Now, we have a beautiful 5 month little boy. I love him dearly. I marvel at everything he does. It brings me so much joy just to listen to his giggle, or see his smile, and hold his little hands and feet. My husband on the other hand was always OK with having him. He said that God had a plan. He was right.

My friend had her 1st baby at 45

Friday, May 16, 2008
My friend had her first baby at 45, conceived naturally.

A relative of my husband was the oldest woman ever to give birth at our local maternity hospital aged 49, again conceived naturally.

4461~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

One of my college roommates had her one and only baby quite late…. A result of waiting for the right moment to come, as well as unfortunate circumstances …..

She’s now almost 50 and her daughter is 4 1/2…… Technically old enough to be a grandmother!

4462~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My mother had her last healthy baby at 45 and her last pregnancy at 47!

I have friends who had babies in their 40's - one started at 42 and had 3 one year after the other (all normal and healthy).

4463~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I'm 43 and am 35 weeks pregnant with our first child. I was quite fit and healthy at the beginning of the pregnancy and this has stayed with me throughout.

On the scale of things, I've had a lovely pregnancy so far: just occasional nausea in the first trimester, one night of acid reflux in the second and a week of leg cramps in the third.

I'm as anxious as any other first timer, but more grounded than ever before in myself. I love my husband and we're both delighted to be having a baby. His support means everything right now.

4464~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I don’t think you are old at 43. My God, my friend's mum had her last at 55, and that is the honest truth. She had a beautiful girl, and was all healthy.

Then my younger friend had a Down Syndrome baby, and she was 20. So please, I really don’t believe in this **** that the older you are, the more sick your child can be .

She was having their 1ST child at 55

Thursday, May 8, 2008
My sister-in-law was in a childbirth class when pregnant with her youngest daughter (at age 41), and there was a lady there she said was about 55 and she and her hubby were having their FIRST child. Didn't know if it was natural or not - but looked healthy and happy pregnancy.

I never met any of these women who had babies at 50+ personally, but there are some, and more stories of course on this site!

4421~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My name is Carol, and I had my first child at age 43 (almost 44). My son Daniel is now 3 years old and I'm TTC [trying to conceive] my second child.

I am also an Older Mom - 52 and pregnant. Very excited though. Second marriage - husband was never married and wanted kids and so there you have it. I have two kids - 23 and 21, and really looking forward to this adventure. - Barb

4423~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I have to share that I have always had light period and it never stopped me from getting pregnant 8 times (I have 5 living children with the last being conceived naturally, and born when I was 43)

I even got pregnant at almost 45, when I had only had my period back for 6 months, and it was very light.

4424~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Every time I'm ready to give up, I think of Jodi and how she DID give up and 7 months later at 43, she is now 3 months pregnant.

Gran's a mum again at 60!

Thursday, April 17, 2008
Photo by news.bbc.co.uknew mom at 54 or 60?
A grandmother looks set to enter the record books as Britain's oldest mother following the birth of a baby boy 35 years after her first child.

Welsh farmer Elizabeth Buttle, whose maiden name is Espley, is believed to be 60 years old.

If correct, the miracle mum's age would beat the previous record birth by five years.

Checks by one British news agency at the Family Records Centre in London revealed an Elizabeth Espley was born early in 1937 in the Chester area.

Further checks revealed no-one by the same name was born between 1937 and late 1945.

No fertility drugs

Twice-married Mrs Buttle, whose eldest grandson is 19, gave birth to new arrival Joseph David by Caesarian section at West Wales General Hospital in Carmarthen eight weeks ago.

The mother, who lives on her farm in the west Wales village of Cwmann, near Lampeter, became pregnant without the use of fertility drugs by her partner Peter Rawston, 56.

Talking about baby Joseph, Elizabeth says: "He is my little miracle and he makes me feel like a young woman again. I feel perfectly well and I don't know what the fuss is about.

"There were no complications and the hospital staff were absolutely marvellous."

"Baby was not planned"

A widow with three grandchildren, Mrs Buttle had a daughter in 1962 with her late husband Tom, who died 10 years ago.

New arrival Joseph, described by his mother as a "lovely, healthy little lad", was born slightly premature.

Elizabeth, who celebrates her birthday next month, said although the baby was not planned, she and her partner had taken no precautions to avoid the pregnancy.

Kathleen Campbell, of Ilkeston, Derbyshire, is entered in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest woman in the UK to give birth at the age of 55 in 1987.

Journalist needs help

Monday, March 24, 2008
Johanna wrote: I am researching a story about the very thing you wrote about on your blog. The fact that women undergoing menopause can still conceive (though it is more difficult) so they need to keep using birth control if they want to avoid a pregnancy.

I am looking to interview women who either had to deal with an unplanned pregnancy during perimenopause or were surprised to discover they still needed to use birth control. If you know of anyone willing to share their story, could you forward my contact information. Unfortunately, I am under the gun with my deadline. I have to submit the piece to my editor at the Wall Street Journal (it is a freelance story) by April 1. Can you help me?
