After 30 years of marriage, 3 husbands, woman gives birth at 52

Sunday, December 26, 2010
52-year-old Alhaja Owolabi Kareem gave birth to a bouncing baby girlAfter almost three decades of marriage, spent in the harrowing embrace of barrenness, and with three husbands, 52-year-old Alhaja Owolabi Kareem against all odds and human expectations not only got pregnant, but also gave birth to a bouncing baby girl.

For the couple, Alhaji and Alhaja Owolabi Kareem of Ajah in the Eti Osa Local Government Area Lagos State, November 26, 2010 will forever be remembered as a day of celebration of miracles. It was the day on which the 52-year-old Alhaja Owolabi Kareem put to bed a bouncing baby girl. It was the first in her life.

Like most women of her age, Alhaja Ajah as she is fondly called by her fellow members at the Saints Gospel Church of Christ Hand of Fire, Ago along Igando-Ikotun Road, Lagos had entered menopause. Some derisively call it meno-stop!

After being married for about 30 years and with no fruit to show for her conjugal labour, she had lost all hopes of ever having a baby but for her new found faith.

Five years earlier, the 52 year old business woman had been introduced to a new faith by a friend who had watched as she struggled desperately and in despair but in vain for a child.

Prior to this, it had been one long struggle filled with anguish, fears, tears, humiliation and even desperation.

According to Alhaja, she had visited all known hospitals and medical practitioners both orthodox and unconventional, local and foreign all to no avail.

It was after she had reached menopause and lost hope that she decided to heed her friend's advice of seeking further spiritual help at a particular worship centre where she worships currently.

Woman, 59, becomes oldest person ever to be given IVF

Saturday, January 16, 2010
Happy family - Susan Tollefsen with partner Nick Mayer and their two-year-old daughter FreyaA 59-year-old woman has become the oldest person ever to be offered fertility treatment by a British clinic, overturning guidelines prohibiting treatment to women over 50.

Doctors at the private London Women’s Clinic on Harley Street, one of the most successful IVF units in the country, have unanimously agreed to help Susan Tollefsen conceive.

Mrs Tollefsen, a retired teacher who turns 60 in October, said: ‘I’m still so full of life and healthy at 60 I don’t see any reason why I shouldn’t be treated.’

Mrs Tollefsen already has a two-year-old child, conceived at a Russian clinic after she was refused treatment in the UK because of her age.

Miriam Belov - first birth at 51

Wednesday, November 18, 2009
Miriam Belov - first birth at 51Miriam Belov - Shares her thought regarding wellness and relaxation at home and work, as well a her joy of giving her first birth at 51 to Madaline

Miriam says: As you might have figured out, I am now in my 50's. After being very concentrated on my calling, I found myself pregnant for the first time at 51. Needless to say, my husband and I were elated. After a blessedly uneventful pregnancy, I gave birth to a daughter.

I sincerely believe that I was able to carry so easily because I used my own relaxation techniques and have a healthy body due to years of exercise, yoga, tai chi and right eating.

Indeed, during the pregnancy I spent a great of time in meditation and relaxation. I feel that the 9 months of gestation are crucial for the developing fetus and affect the rest of her life.

Sasha Mears, 50, mom to Sadie, 6

Sunday, September 20, 2009
Stock photo by boletin
Sasha Mears, 50, mom to Sadie, 6Sasha Mears Age: 50. Mother to Sadie, aged six. She is married to Michael, 47, a cab driver and landscape gardener

I got married when I was 37 after Michael and I had been together for two years. I had had lots of relationships before, but never seriously considered spending the rest of my life with any of them. We started trying for a family as soon as we got married.

I didn't have any difficulty getting pregnant. It was getting to the next stage that proved to be the problem. They reckoned I lost the first one because of flu. I was grief stricken. In all, I had two definite miscarriages and two probable ones before Sadie came along. Every time you have a miscarriage it takes up to six months for your hormonal levels to re-establish themselves to a normal pitch ready to accept another pregnancy. So effectively every time a pregnancy fails you've lost another year.

I didn't have those years to lose so I went to the assisted conception unit at King's College Hospital in London on the NHS. They gave me drugs that boosted my ovulation rate. You produce six or seven eggs and they fertilise you synthetically. We did three cycles. On the third one I conceived, which was pregnancy number four, but it faltered again at around seven or eight weeks. As I was waiting to start the next cycle I conceived all by myself. I was thrilled. I was nearly 44 when I had Sadie.

I think there are a lot of advantages to being an older mother. For somebody like me who has always been a workaholic you make time because you know you haven't got time to waste. Sadie has never been to a childminder. We juggle work like mad so one or other is always there for her. I'm a theatrical costumier and make sure I get up at 5am three or four times a week to get enough hours of work done to keep my business afloat. But fortunately it's very well established, which it wouldn't be if I was younger. I don't have money worries at all.

I don't really worry about her being on her own in the future because I come from a very long-lived family. There is no cancer or heart disease. We die of boredom aged 93 having caught a cold cross-country running. My husband's family are also healthy and long-lived. You could go under a bus tomorrow. I have a will and there's a trust fund set up.

The only disadvantage of being an older mother is that we would have liked another child and it isn't going to happen. I don't think being an older mother is something that people should risk planning for because of the fertility issue. But if it happens to you be pleased because it carries huge advantages.

Pamela Laycock, 50, mom of Toby, 5

Wednesday, September 16, 2009
Stock photo by bjearwicke
Pamela Laycock, 50, mom of Toby, 5Pamela Laycock Age: 50. Mother of Toby, aged five. Derek, her partner of 16 years, is 48, and runs a chauffeur company

I'd always wanted lots of children. We started consciously trying at the end of my thirties when I still hadn't got pregnant. I had IVF in the end, which cost about £14,000. I was 43 at the time. I made a conscious decision that after the age of 45 I would give up. It took only two attempts. I was very, very lucky. I was over the moon when I was told the news. It was better than winning the lottery.

It was then quite scary thinking that maybe something would go wrong. We made a decision not to have any tests for Down's Syndrome because whatever happened we would love that child and look after it. But Toby was absolutely perfect.

My husband loves children but it's never been the be all and end all for him to have one, whereas I desperately wanted one. Now he thinks it's the best thing that happened in the whole world. He still has a little tear when he thinks about Toby being born.

My mother was a bit taken aback when I told her I was pregnant, and worried that I wouldn't have the energy - but I do. I'm a London guide, and when I was pregnant I worked up until a week before he was born. I worked with two colleagues who were in their early thirties and pregnant and they were always having days off because they didn't feel well, and they stopped working way before they gave birth. I had no problem at all.

Being older I have more experience of life to share. I have done a lot, so I'm not desperate to travel. I have friends who had children in their twenties who are at university or leaving home and they're wondering what to do now. I'm too old to go backpacking and I'm lucky that I got all that out of my system before I had Toby. We also had a house, so we weren't struggling to get a foot on the property ladder.

I don't think of myself as being any different from other mums. Not many people know how old I am. Most of the mothers in Toby's class are coming up to 40 anyway. At my antenatal class there were seven of us all having our first and they were all in their mid-thirties onwards.

I do wish I had had him younger because I would have loved to have had more than one. We won't do IVF again because there would be too big an age gap with Toby. It's also too traumatic and expensive.

Toby doesn't recognise that I'm an older mum. I do worry that things might be said at a later date. I don't think I look my age at the minute, but nature will take its course and I'm sure people will make comments. Hopefully it will be something that Toby can brush off as it's not an oddity these days.

Obviously, I would like to see Toby married and it would be lovely to see grandchildren. I don't see why I won't. I don't intend to go before I'm 100.

Being a mother is all I've ever wanted to be and it completes the purpose of my life. I love every second I spend with him. It's the most wonderful experience. I think older mums are possibly more appreciative. I used to feel very left out and now I feel I belong.

I was 45 when I became pregnant

Monday, August 10, 2009

I was 45 and my husband was 50 when I became pregnantI was 45 and my husband was 50 when I became pregnant. We had been childless for 22 years and it was a great shock, to put it mildly. My docotor assured me that my age was no problem because my health was excellent. I had an uneventful and easy pregnancy, and was thrilled when I delivered a beautiful baby girl.

We had some adjustments to make to our lifestyle, but we handled them well, Chris has been the joy of my life. She is 32 now, happily married and has given me four beautiful grandchildren. I am now a widow - 78 years young.

Is it fair for a child to have a menopausal mom? I will let my daughter answer that question. I'm enclosing her letter.

I don't regret having a baby at 57

Saturday, May 9, 2009
'I know there are people who will always think I was selfish to have a baby at 57, but Freya couldn't be more loved or cared for, and people live longer these days, don't they?

'There is no reason why, if I stay healthy, I shouldn't live to reach my 80s or 90s and see her into adulthood,' says Susan, who turns 59 in October.

Wednesday, April 29, 2009
Dana Ramkissoon gave birth aged 55The world's oldest mother of quads told today how the babies brought joy at the end of a ten-year struggle to have children.

Dana Ramkissoon, 55, gave birth to four healthy boys in August thanks to fertility treatment.

The cleaner and her husband, Pabla Singh, 38, from Mantua, Italy, spent £10,000 on IVF [invitro fertilization] over ten years before a successful course of treatment in India.

The proud mother said: 'I'm glad we kept trying and never lost hope.'

Manav, Manmeet, Radvee and Roshan, now eight months old, were delivered by Caesarean section two months prematurely.

Mr Singh said: 'We are very, very happy. Having four babies is just an even bigger blessing.'

Constance Marie's Labor of Love

Tuesday, April 28, 2009
Constance Marie, mom at 43Constance Marie, 43, may be best known as George Lopez's wife on the "The George Lopez Show," but she's recently stepped into a new role -- mom to her 3-month-old, Luna Marie. As she tells it, having a child was no easy labor.

It was three and a half years of struggle -- one of the hardest things I've ever done. I thought, "Oh, I'm Latin, of course I can have babies late in life."

Giving birth at 79 – new world record or fake?

Saturday, April 18, 2009
Ulya was born in 1884 and her child was born 79 years laterA Russian woman claims to be both the world's oldest person and the oldest-ever mother. Her passport shows that she’s 125, and she says she last gave birth a mere 46 years ago, at the tender age of 79.

If true, she has beaten the previous record holder by almost a decade. Some critics, however, have thrown doubts on her story, suggesting her documents possibly don’t offer the whole truth.

Possible in theory

Ulya Margusheva is an ethnic Kabardin from the Russian republic of Kabardino-Balkaria in the North Caucasus. Long-lifer Ulya says she doesn’t eat anything sweet or salty and that she hates bananas.

Her story becomes all the more fascinating with the revelation that the woman gave birth to her only child when she was 79.

“I explain it by the fact that she lives in an ecologically-safe environment. She's a healthy woman herself,” said Maria Tembotova, the republic's chief obstetrician.

“And despite the fact she got married in her late she had a healthy lifestyle. So it is possible in theory”.

Journalists investigate

So far a Japanese woman lays claim to the record as the oldest mother to give birth. If Ulya really is the true world record holder, why is she enjoying so little publicity?

Two documents, her passport and her child’s birth certificate, make it quite clear: Ulya was born in 1884 and her child was born 79 years later. Ulya explains:

“Yes, I gave birth to my child naturally. No caesarean section. A nurse at the hospital told me when I was checking out with a child: ‘Oh! What a poor woman!’”

Life's surprise is first-birth for Teresa, aged 48

Friday, March 27, 2009
Lifes surprise is first-birth for Teresa, aged 48There was definitely a pregnant pause when shocked Birmingham patient Teresa Orr found out she was about to have a baby.

The 48-year-old had gone to the doctors thinking she had started menopause rather than becoming pregnant for the first time.

Delighted parents Teresa and William Orr, of Stirchley, have celebrated the birth of surprise baby Gracie after thinking they had married too late to start a family.

“We only got married two years ago and never even thought about children because we are both in our late 40s and thought it couldn’t happen,” said doting dad William, a 47-year-old college lecturer at City College, in Handsworth.

“It was the biggest surprise we have ever had when we found out we were having a baby. We simply couldn’t believe it, especially as Teresa had assumed she was starting the menopause when her periods stopped.

“We haven’t had IVF or any fertility treatments, it all happened completely naturally, so we feel very blessed. A midwife at Birmingham Women’s Hospital and an obstetrician friend of ours said it is the first time they had come across a woman getting pregnant for the first time at such a late age, they said it was very rare.”

Gracie was born on March 7, weighing in at 6lbs 3oz, at Birmingham Women’s Hospital, following a smooth birth with no serious complications connected to the age of the mother.

Medics think care assistant Teresa’s active lifestyle and good fitness played a part in her conceiving into her late 40s.

The couple have had to adapt quickly to the news, moving from their small flat in Moseley to a house in Fordhouse Lane with enough room for a nursery.

“Even though we weren’t expecting Gracie, we are so glad we have her now, it’s remarkable,” added Teresa and William. “When she becomes a teenager though, at 13, we will be in our 60s but I am sure we will be able to cope with that as just having her is a treasure enough for us.”

Older women giving birth to a burgeoning trend in motherhood

Saturday, March 21, 2009

Baby can wait
Fran Watson gave birth to Angus when she was 43, having waited 20 years to find the right partner, get married and then have a child.

"What I feel as a mom who waited a long time is 'My God, I'm happy,'" said the longtime publicist. "And what can possibly be wrong with that wonderful feeling?"
-------

A fitness professional in Calgary, Helen Vanderburg said she delayed having children mostly because she wasn't in a committed relationship until she was older; building her career played a secondary role. She underwent a full complement of testing to rule out any genetic abnormalities and, at 45, gave birth to daughter, Sage.

Last-ditch works for new mum at 47

Monday, December 22, 2008
Fiona and Paul Lister with baby Izaak, whose birth came as a near miracle to the proud parentsIT TOOK 11 years, but finally Fiona and Paul Lister have a baby of their own.

Izaak James Lister arrived on December 15, making Fiona, 47, one of the oldest first-time mums in the area.

After trying and failing to fall pregnant naturally for years since the age of 35, she turned to IVF.

Fiona and her husband went through all the standard tests to determine where the trouble was with their fertility.

“The doctors couldn't find anything wrong, and we were told there was a non-specific fertility problem,” she said.

After many failed attempts, Fiona had given up on ever having children.

“We were told that we would have to get a donor egg,” she said.

Fiona entertained the idea for a short time, but Paul wasn't keen.

“You can get a donor egg, but we really wanted our own baby, not someone else's,” he said.

With just two more vitrified embryos on ice five years after her previous attempt, it was now or never.

“They had collected the eggs when I was 41, and after being frozen for five years Sydney IVF gave us four options - have them implanted, donate them to someone else, throw them away, or donate them to stem cell research,” Fiona said. “We thought we might as well use them, even though we had a one-in-1000 chance or less of being successful.”

But it seems miracles happen.

After watching her baby boy grow each time she had a scan, she became more and more excited. As a nurse, Fiona was aware of all the things that could go wrong, such as miscarriage, and her 51 per cent chance of having a child with Down syndrome.

She was so worried she hadn't opened the things she bought for the baby.

But against all odds, Fiona had a smooth pregnancy and birth, and had her cesarean in the very operating theatre she works in.

Her midwifery work prepared Fiona well for caring for baby Izaak.

“It's just like caring for another baby, but I'm still shocked I don't have to give it back, because this time it's mine,” she said, smiling.

Joy of Scotland's oldest mother, aged 50

Thursday, December 4, 2008
Fertility adviser Juliet Le PageLIKE most childless women approaching 50, Juliet Le Page thought she was too old to become a mother. She had always concentrated on her career and, as she entered her late forties, had almost given up hope.

But after having her second child last week, Mrs Le Page officially became the oldest woman in Scotland to give birth – aged 50 and one day.

"I'm absolutely thrilled and tremendously happy," she said as she cradled tiny Julia Kitty Rose, who had been born following a Caesarean section.

Mother at 58, thanks to new technology

Wednesday, December 3, 2008
A 58-year-old woman gave birth through assisted reproductive technology at a private hospital here on MondayCHENNAI: A 58-year-old woman gave birth through assisted reproductive technology at a private hospital here on Monday.

The birth was achieved through an intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection using egg from a donor.

The couple, Vedam and his wife Selvamary from Ramnad district, have been married for 36 years. Vedam, 60, used to work as a machine operator in a private company in the city. The two were desperate for a baby and had tried all kinds of treatment until Selvamary achieved menopause 10 years ago.

On reading about Aakash Fertility Centre in a newspaper, they approached the clinic and were told a baby was possible with a donor egg. Ten months later, the procedure was performed with sperm being injected into donor eggs, which were then grown in an incubator. Four days later, the eggs were transferred into Selvamary’s womb. Laser assisted hatching had been used on the eggs to improve chances of implantation.

“However, after three months, one of the embryos was aborted naturally, but the other survived.

On Tuesday morning, at 8 a.m., Selvamary gave birth to a healthy baby boy through a C-section,’’
said Dr Jeyarani Kamaraj, infertility specialist at the hospital.

Selvamary is the oldest patient to have had a baby at the hospital, which had a similar case last year in which a 55-year-old woman gave birth to twins. “This has been made possible through our faith in God and in the doctors here. It has been a life-changing experience for me,’’ said Vedam.

Dr Kamaraj said Selvamary had diabetes, which needed to be controlled carefully before attempting the treatment. “It is a wonderful milestone for us to have been able to give this couple such joy and fulfil a long-held dream of theirs,’’ he said.

She is now 47, TTC with baby #4

Friday, September 26, 2008
My sister had her first child at 41, her third child easily at age 45 without ANY PROBLEM. Her doctor told her...she can "keep going" if she wants.

She plans to have to have three more and "will keep going".... into her fifties. She is now at age 47, TTC [trying to conceive] with baby number 4. - Kathy

Believe me, we're out here! I'm 47, and am having my first. I'm about 4 weeks along right now, and am excited and worried at the same time. I'm just trying to take care of myself and relax!

I'll be 44 when the baby is born

Wednesday, September 24, 2008
I am 43. I will be 44 when the baby is born (my birthday is September, baby is due in November).

4601~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I was participating in an online forum for older moms. I ran across one mom who was single, and got pregnant with an IUI [intra-uterine insemination] and Clomid at age 46.

Pregnant on my 45th birthday

Monday, September 22, 2008
I learned I was pregnant on my 45th birthday, all natural, and had my son on July 4, 2005. I am now 46 and a half and TTC [trying to conceive] for #2. Wishing you lots of sticky beans! - Caroline

I got my BFP [big fat positive - positive pregnancy test] yesterday. I use Source Naturals progesterone cream which I get in a local Health Food store. It's about $15 for 4 oz (it was on sale).

It has 22 mg of progesterone per 1/4 teaspoon and I use 1/2 teaspoon in the morning and another at night. Susan - trying for first at 45!
