Holly Martin, 45, gave birth to a healthy baby

Tuesday, May 18, 2010
Holly Martin, 45, gave birth to a healthy babyAnother patient of Dr. Winslow’s, Holly Martin*, age 45, conceived after treatment and gave birth to a healthy baby. Holly says, “We went through a lot to have this baby.” Holly and her husband began trying to conceive when Holly was 38. When the couple first went to see Dr. Winslow, he tested both of them, standard procedure to determine the cause of infertility. As the cause was not absolutely determined at this point, Dr. Winslow put Holly on the maximum dosage of follicle stimulating hormone, the strongest drug given for stimulation of ovulation.

Dr. Winslow explained the egg donor program to Holly and her husband, who decided to try that method. Cindy Brubaker, then head of the egg donor program at FIRM, helped Holly throughout the very emotional process. “I had decided that if I couldn’t use my own eggs, I would stop. When I found out my eggs were not an option, I quickly decided to use the donor egg program and have never regretted it. I was surprised at what a wonderful experience it turned out being for me. I felt very close to my donor, even though she was anonymous, knowing that we were going through a process together. A person who donates their eggs so a couple she does not even know can become a family is a truly loving and generous soul. It was an amazing experience receiving this gift from a stranger. I have never experienced that kind of generosity before and it affected me at a very deep level.”

Menopausal New Mom

Sunday, January 31, 2010
Menopausal New Mom
Debbie, a 48 year old mom-blogger from Canada, felt blessed to have her daughter (now 3-and-a-half) at 45. “It was a bit of a surprise” says Debbie. “Although I was not on birth control, I didn’t think it would be possible at 44 to get pregnant without medical intervention.”

Debbie feels there are significant benefits to being an older first time mom.

“I think that not being focused on ‘finding myself’ is a big benefit to her (Debbie’s daughter). At 45, I pretty much know who I am and don’t feel I have anything to prove to anyone. I’ve had the career, I’ve had the independence and didn’t marry until I was 44.”

But like the rest of us who have our children after 40, Debbie felt isolated—an experience that was compounded by living in a small town. About a year ago, she “hit menopause” and that’s when she launched her blog, Menopausal New Mom.

Mother of 13: "I want IVF for Christmas"

Tuesday, December 15, 2009
Mother of 13 - I want IVF for ChristmasA mother-of-13 has told her husband she wants IVF for her Christmas present this year.

Debbie Simpson, 45, is struggling to conceive for the first time in her life with Derek, but doesn't yet feel her family is complete.

'Having babies is my job,' said Mrs Simpson, who has spent an incredible ten years of her life pregnant. '

I love it and I'll keep trying until I'm 60. We didn't plan to have such a big family, it just kind of happened because there was no reason to stop.
'

It's never taken me longer than six months to fall pregnant when we stop using contraception.'

Jane Seymour Recalls Scary 1st Months With TwinsIn an expansive new interview with About.com, actress and author Jane Seymour dishes on the highs — and occasional lows — of being a mom to twins. [born when she was 45]

Man, 56, diagnosed as infertile, meets woman, 44

Thursday, September 24, 2009
Man, 56, diagnosed as infertile, meets woman, 44Birth control isn't part of their whirlwind romance – and they get pregnant before you can say “oopsy baby.” Inconceivable, right?

Well, not quite. That's how a baby girl was born to Laura Arpiainen, a Vancouver architect, now 46, and her partner, an interior designer. Their 14-month-old daughter was a “gift out of nowhere,” Ms. Arpiainen says.

The first-time mother wasn't trying to conceive, she adds, and her periods were irregular for several months before the pregnancy. “I thought I had menopause.”

Surprise, surprise.

I was 45 when I became pregnant

Monday, August 10, 2009

I was 45 and my husband was 50 when I became pregnantI was 45 and my husband was 50 when I became pregnant. We had been childless for 22 years and it was a great shock, to put it mildly. My docotor assured me that my age was no problem because my health was excellent. I had an uneventful and easy pregnancy, and was thrilled when I delivered a beautiful baby girl.

We had some adjustments to make to our lifestyle, but we handled them well, Chris has been the joy of my life. She is 32 now, happily married and has given me four beautiful grandchildren. I am now a widow - 78 years young.

Is it fair for a child to have a menopausal mom? I will let my daughter answer that question. I'm enclosing her letter.

It wasn't the menopause, it was a miracle!

Monday, August 3, 2009
Against the odds: Alice Eve Cohen cradles baby Eliana who she gave birth to after believing she was infertile for 15 yearsWith my feet in stirrups, I asked my gynaecologist about my symptoms, while she performed an internal exam. She said: 'Welcome to the menopause!' She advised me to exercise, start a diet, continue taking the hormones and see her again in a year.

On Friday, September 10, 1999, I saw another doctor. She suspected a large uterine or ovarian tumour and sent me for an emergency CAT scan. Afterwards, I fell asleep in the waiting area. 'Mrs Cohen.' Someone was shaking my shoulder.

'Mrs Cohen. We did find something in you. We found a baby.'

For the next two-and-a-half months, I stayed indoors and lay on my left side. I turned 45.

I had a baby after 40

Tuesday, July 28, 2009
Stock photo by jamocha76
After two days, my last-born daughter wanted to hold himMy husband and I were shaken when laboratory reports after an endless series of fever bouts showed that I was pregnant. At 45, I thought I was way in menopause and we had four children with our lastborn in senior one.

I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. They found him home when they came for holidays. After two days, my last-born daughter wanted to hold him. The others gathered all around and thought he was sweet.

They then threw themselves into taking care of him which became their favourite chore, but only my last born daughter apologised although the actions of the rest showed regret. He is seven years old now and very spoilt from all the attention from his siblings. They can’t stop buying him gifts.

The mother of all dilemmas . . .

Wednesday, May 27, 2009
Patricia had her last son when she was 45Patricia Cronnelly, mum of three sons, thinks we should give Elizabeth Adeney support.

'I won't condemn her," says Patricia, who had her last son when she was 45.
"Isn't she a brave woman to get pregnant at 66? She says she's fit. I wish her luck.

"I'm not saying women of 60-plus should get pregnant. I wouldn't do it. I'm not going to have a fourth baby at 49 or 50, but that's for selfish reasons. I breastfeed as long as my children want me to, and we have them in the bed. It's full-on parenting for around five years, and I'm not prepared to make that commitment.

"It's not so much age that matters as the bond that you have with your child and the quality of care. Will an 18-year-old have a better or worse quality in the relationship than a 66-year-old whose ego has been burned away?

"You can't tell without knowing what motivates her. We don't know what kind of person she is, or what kind of child she will have. She could have been a useless mother at 20 and useless at 66; or wonderful at 20 and even more amazing now."

Menopausal New Mom

Saturday, May 16, 2009
From Menopausal New Mom : I guess I should backtrack a little and say for the record, how blessed I feel to have had my first and it turns out only child at the ripe old age of 45. She was the typical beautiful, bouncing baby who now fills every one of my days and finally now that she is three years old, just the occasional night.

So there I was, 44 years old and well aware of how remote my chances of becoming pregnant without intervention were. They must be somewhere in the negative numbers by now I remember thinking. No problem. I'd stop taking birth control. I probably didn't need them anyway and it would satisfy my husband who wanted to make sure that if there could be a child in our future, at least we were allowing nature to take its course.

So that's how I ended up like this. Up to my neck in dirty diapers and staring menopause right in the face!

Mariella Frostrup, 46, from Bringing Up Britain

Sunday, April 26, 2009
Mariella on work-life balance - I have become a lot more organised and focused at work, because I have a finite amount of time and I do not want it to eat into time I could have with the kidsBroadcaster and journalist Mariella Frostrup, 46, lives in west London with her husband, lawyer Jason McCue, 40, and their children, Molly, four, and Danny, three. She is back on Radio 4 with a new series of Bringing Up Britain, which looks at how we are raising the next generation.

You had your first child in your 40s. How is life as an older mother?

Well, I don't know what it's like to have had a baby when you're 25, so I've nothing to compare it against. I'm sure there are advantages to it – such as having more energy. But, then, when I was 25, I wasn't ready for the responsibility of bringing up another human being. But I don't want to be some kind of poster girl for older motherhood. That anxiety, when you know time is not on your side and you're not sure whether you're going to have children, can be very hard to deal with.

Time to update our over 40 Birth Statistics Quote

Wednesday, March 25, 2009
It's time to update this quote:

"In 2005, there were more than 104,000 births in the United States to women ages 40 through 44, and over 6,500 to women 45 and older. In 2004, there were 1,786 live births to women over 42, using donor eggs."

Checking the 2007 birth stats today at the CDC and I found:
All races and origins
40–44 years................. 105,071 live births
45–54 years................ 7,349 live births

Next I went to SART, who has the 2007 IVF and Donor Egg rates in the US:

Fresh Embryos From Non-Donor Oocytes
Number of cycles : (40-42) 8,865 (43-44) 5,749
Percentage of cycles resulting in live births : (40-42) 11.7 (43-44) 4.6
Total live births : (40-42) 1,037.2 (43-44) 264.5

TOTAL (40-44) : 1,301.7

Thawed Embryos From Non-Donor Oocytes
Number of transfers : (40-42) 1,043 (43-44) 652
Percentage of transfers resulting in live births : (40-42) 20.7 (43-44) 14.6
Total live births : (40-42) 215.9 ( 43-44) 95.2

TOTAL (40-44) : 311

Total number of women conceiving from IVF (non-DE) (40-44) : 1,613

Donor Oocytes (all ages)
Number of transfers : (Fresh Embryos) 9,575 (Thawed Embryos) 5,087
Percentage of transfers resulting in live births : (Fresh) 55.2 (Thawed) 31.7
Total Live Births : (Fresh) 5,285.4 (Thawed) 1612.6

TOTAL births by Donor Egg (all ages) : 6,898

Number of live-birth deliveries resulting from ART cycles started in 2006: 41,343

How old were the women who used ART in the United States in 2006?
Figure 3: The average age of women using ART services in 2006 was 36. The largest group of women using ART services were women younger than 35, representing 39% of all ART cycles carried out in 2006. Twenty-three percent of ART cycles were carried out among women aged 35–37, 19% among women aged 38–40, 10% among women aged 41–42, and 10% among women older than 42.

Number of live-birth deliveries to women using ART older than 42 in 2007: 4,134

How did the types of ART cycles used in the United States in 2006 differ among women of different ages?
Figure 4 shows that, in 2006, the type of ART cycles varied by the woman’s age. The vast majority (96%) of women younger than 35 used their own eggs, whereas only 4% used donor eggs. In contrast, 21% of women aged 41 to 42 and more than half (55%) of women older than 42 used donor eggs. Across all age groups, more ART cycles using fresh eggs or embryos were performed than cycles using frozen embryos.

Number of live-birth deliveries to women using Donor Egg older than 42 in 2004: 2,274

So the updated quote becomes:
"In 2007, there were more than 105,000 births in the United States to women ages 40 through 44, and over 7,349 to women 45 to 54. In 2007, there were 2,274 live births to women over 42, using donor eggs."

Older women giving birth to a burgeoning trend in motherhood

Saturday, March 21, 2009
Baby can wait
Fran Watson gave birth to Angus when she was 43, having waited 20 years to find the right partner, get married and then have a child.

"What I feel as a mom who waited a long time is 'My God, I'm happy,'" said the longtime publicist. "And what can possibly be wrong with that wonderful feeling?"
-------

A fitness professional in Calgary, Helen Vanderburg said she delayed having children mostly because she wasn't in a committed relationship until she was older; building her career played a secondary role. She underwent a full complement of testing to rule out any genetic abnormalities and, at 45, gave birth to daughter, Sage.

"Oops!" babies pose challenge to parents and siblings

Monday, November 10, 2008
Picture of a new babys little feet.On Father's Day 2007, over pancakes at IHOP, Salinans Doris and Randy Worcester broke the news to their daughters, ages 15, 12 and 9: their family was about to have a new addition.

No, it wasn't a new bathroom or bedroom or a new car, the girls discovered. Instead, in just about five months, they would have a new baby brother.

"It was a stunning shock when we found out," Randy said. "There was a nine-year gap there."

Randy and Doris had found themselves, at ages 45 and 44, the parents-to-be of an unplanned child, or what some refer to as an "Accidental" or "Oops!" baby.

I'm pregnant & scared to death at 44

Monday, September 29, 2008
Hi! My name is Robin, and I found out on Saturday that I'm pregnant! I'm scared to death! It was totally unexpected even though I was being dumb and playing Russian Roulette.

The prescription for my birth control pill had run out a few months ago. I called to make an appointment with my OB/gyn [obstetrician/gynecology]. She moved to Hawaii. So I found a new one but wasn't able to get in until June. I figured at my age and my history in difficulty with getting pregnant in the past, I just needed to be careful and I'd be fine. WRONG!

I don't know what I was thinking. I'm 44 after all, I should know better. I have two wonderful boys from a previous marriage. I've been seeing a wonderful man for nearly 3 years now. We both felt we were too old to have children. I dropped a bomb in the poor man's lap when I told him Saturday night.

This is the last thing either of us wanted, but we decided we would continue with the pregnancy. I think we will both slowly get use to the idea.

I'm scared to death with all I've read about what can go wrong. I'm looking forward to reading about all the good and positive with being pregnant at 45. I'm also looking forward to making some online friends to help each other through this exciting time in our lives.

4611~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I just want to add that my grandmother had her last baby at 44. And my aunt had her last baby at 43.

Granted, I'm 45 now but I feel that my eggs have been "pampered" more than my grandmother or aunt, who led harder lives than me (I'm kind of spoiled, I admit it!). Obviously, they didn't go to a fertility clinic 'cause there weren't any.

Pregnant at 46, completely unplanned

Sunday, September 28, 2008
My sister in law just told me that a woman who goes to her church got pregnant at 46 -- completely unplanned -- and delivered her beautiful and healthy baby a week ago!

No one even knew she was pregnant for the longest time. I guess she and her husband were kind of embarrassed (they already have two children, the youngest who is 20!) and didn't really mention it until the last couple months when she got really big.

I, of course, asked my sister in law the same question I always ask about women that age -- did this woman do in vitro or anything?

My sister-in-law laughed, and said, "Are you kidding? They thought she was going through menopause and she didn't realize she was pregnant till she started feeling "the signs" -- again, which she attributed to menopause -- and her doctor confirmed it.

4609~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

This is for every woman who wants a baby, and isn't sure if it's even possible, every woman who might be pregnant now and not sure if she wants a baby and every woman who just isn't sure that she will have the energy and strength to raise a baby after 40.

My grandmother had 12 children between 1932 and 1957. Her last was at age 45. Every one of them were healthy, uncomplicated births. Most were born at home with a midwife or the local country doctor attending. After being blessed as she was with the births of all these babies, came the raising of them. My grandmother worked from morning 'til night taking care of her home and family. She never complained. She always said she had a good life and felt blessed.

So just remember that women are AMAZING. Each and every one of us. We have an inner strength that sometimes we don't even realize we have. It's okay to be sad and blue sometimes, it's only natural, but never give up having hope and faith that whatever we want for our lives we can make come true and whatever life throws at us we'll be able to handle. - Rhonda
