Saroj Naik, mom at 51 thru IVF

Monday, March 14, 2011
Saroj Naik, mom at 51 thru IVFSaroj Naik's world collapsed in 2009 when her gynaecologist told her that she was menopausal and could never conceive. Although she had already had four miscarriages, 51-year-old Saroj and her husband Satyawan, 54, who reside at Merces, never lost hope and prayed for the gift of a child.

Their prayers seemed to have been answered when, through the method of in-vitro fertilization (IVF), Saroj was able to conceive again. The couple's elation knew no bounds when she ultimately gave birth to a healthy baby girl on February 10. Their joy doubled when they were informed that Saroj was the oldest woman in the state to have had a successful post-menopausal delivery with the help of IVF.

"Now, our days are filled with joy and happiness. Our day starts and ends with the hearty laughter of our little girl Saili," a proud Saroj said.

Daughter at 51y was worth it

Tuesday, March 8, 2011
My daughter Bonnie was worth itIt took 34 years, £50,000, miscarriages, five rounds of IVF and a surrogate - but my daughter Bonnie was worth it

Devoted mother Kim Parsons is proof childless couples should never give up hope.

The 53-year-old spent 34 years and £50,000 trying to fall pregnant but is now mother to a happy two-year-old.

Kim had longed for a baby ever since she was 18, but she tragically suffered a string of miscarriages, followed by five unsuccessful rounds of IVF.

But Kim and her husband David, from Kings Lynn, Norfolk, were determined to be parents and finally chose to use a surrogate, who gave birth to their daughter Bonnie in September 2008.

Kim, from Kings Lynn, Norfolk, said: 'I can't thank her enough - she has completely transformed our life.

'I'll never forget the first time I held my daughter. She was gorgeous, with blonde hair and huge blue eyes, so we decided Bonnie would be a good name for her.

'All those years of heartache and longing just faded away when I looked at her.

'I don't see a long and lonely future for myself and Dave anymore, just one where we raise our baby together, and that's all because of our surrogate.'

Miriam Belov - first birth at 51

Wednesday, November 18, 2009
Miriam Belov - first birth at 51Miriam Belov - Shares her thought regarding wellness and relaxation at home and work, as well a her joy of giving her first birth at 51 to Madaline

Miriam says: As you might have figured out, I am now in my 50's. After being very concentrated on my calling, I found myself pregnant for the first time at 51. Needless to say, my husband and I were elated. After a blessedly uneventful pregnancy, I gave birth to a daughter.

I sincerely believe that I was able to carry so easily because I used my own relaxation techniques and have a healthy body due to years of exercise, yoga, tai chi and right eating.

Indeed, during the pregnancy I spent a great of time in meditation and relaxation. I feel that the 9 months of gestation are crucial for the developing fetus and affect the rest of her life.

Pauline Lyon, 63, mom to 7 & 11y olds

Friday, September 18, 2009
Stock photo by combine69
Pauline Lyon, 63, mom to 7 & 11y oldsPauline Lyon Age: 63. Mother of Brodie, seven, Lauren, 11, and Lisa, 36. She is married to David, 62

When David and I got married 16 years ago we immediately discussed having a baby to seal the marriage. I already had a child from a previous marriage and he had three. We tried to conceive naturally, but when nothing happened we underwent tests and decided to try IVF. It's very emotional and splits a lot of families up, but it brought us closer together. I was 51 when I had Lauren and 55 when I had Brodie. We went to two clinics in the UK. It took three attempts for both of them. We spent £7,500 on having Lauren and £11,000 on having Brodie, but you can't put a price on a baby.

People don't say anything now, but they did when we first had Lauren. Some were for it, some were against. There were one or two in the supermarket who thought I was Lauren's grandmother. It didn't bother me. You expect it really.

Lisa was a bit upset at first over Lauren. She was just stunned to think that her mum was pregnant at the age I was. But she gets on with them really well. I do all the things that other young mums do, such as the school run. Being older you have more patience and you're better off financially. Everything else is the same. You try to do the best for your children and give them the sort of things that you never had.

The only disadvantage to being an older mother is that you might not be around when they're grown up. It makes me feel awful really, but you can't dwell on it. We have made provisions for them. They both have bank accounts.

They know I'm older than other mums, I've told them, but children take that in their stride. It's not a problem for them. Lauren has said she does worry sometimes about her mum dying, but she hasn't spoken about it to me.

It's lovely to wake up to them every morning. Brodie especially is very affectionate. They come into my bed and we have cuddles and kisses. It's brilliant. I wouldn't be without them. Whatever we do, wherever we go, they're always with us. We never palm them off on other people. We like going to car boot sales, and I take them swimming occasionally and to the coast. We're like any other family.

I never feel tired. All the younger mums come up to school and stand there saying: "I'm knackered today." I never feel like that. I don't feel any different from when I was bringing up Lisa.

I'd have another one next week if we could afford it. Two years ago we went to Italy to see if the doctor who treated me would treat me again. He said he would, but then we had loads of tests and my blood pressure was a bit high. He said if I got it down, and it was OK for three months, he would treat us. But we've just moved house so it's on hold at the moment because of the cost. I gave up work in a circuit board factory a couple of years after I met David. I get a pension and family allowance now. David is unemployed at the moment. We'll try again if we can get the money together.

Valley Stream woman gives birth to twins at 53

Monday, June 22, 2009
Sarajean Grainson, 54 with twinsEven if the two digits - 54 - were reversed, Sarajean Grainson would be considered an older mom. But she'll turn 54 in July, and last month the Valley Stream woman gave birth to fraternal twins Matthew and David.

It's not so shocking anymore for a woman in her 50s to have a newborn. But the Grainson clan gathered for a news conference Thursday at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, where the twins were born, because Grainson said she wanted to inspire women not to give up on the dream of carrying a baby.

"I want women to know there is no biological clock. . . . It's not ticking anymore," Grainson said. A doctor brought Grainson out of menopause and combined donor eggs with her husband's sperm.

Grainson plans to stay home full-time; she joked that while other women jump from planes or go to the Caribbean in retirement, she'll joyfully spend hers raising children.

Time to update our over 40 Birth Statistics Quote

Wednesday, March 25, 2009
It's time to update this quote:

"In 2005, there were more than 104,000 births in the United States to women ages 40 through 44, and over 6,500 to women 45 and older. In 2004, there were 1,786 live births to women over 42, using donor eggs."

Checking the 2007 birth stats today at the CDC and I found:
All races and origins
40–44 years................. 105,071 live births
45–54 years................ 7,349 live births

Next I went to SART, who has the 2007 IVF and Donor Egg rates in the US:

Fresh Embryos From Non-Donor Oocytes
Number of cycles : (40-42) 8,865 (43-44) 5,749
Percentage of cycles resulting in live births : (40-42) 11.7 (43-44) 4.6
Total live births : (40-42) 1,037.2 (43-44) 264.5

TOTAL (40-44) : 1,301.7

Thawed Embryos From Non-Donor Oocytes
Number of transfers : (40-42) 1,043 (43-44) 652
Percentage of transfers resulting in live births : (40-42) 20.7 (43-44) 14.6
Total live births : (40-42) 215.9 ( 43-44) 95.2

TOTAL (40-44) : 311

Total number of women conceiving from IVF (non-DE) (40-44) : 1,613

Donor Oocytes (all ages)
Number of transfers : (Fresh Embryos) 9,575 (Thawed Embryos) 5,087
Percentage of transfers resulting in live births : (Fresh) 55.2 (Thawed) 31.7
Total Live Births : (Fresh) 5,285.4 (Thawed) 1612.6

TOTAL births by Donor Egg (all ages) : 6,898

Number of live-birth deliveries resulting from ART cycles started in 2006: 41,343

How old were the women who used ART in the United States in 2006?
Figure 3: The average age of women using ART services in 2006 was 36. The largest group of women using ART services were women younger than 35, representing 39% of all ART cycles carried out in 2006. Twenty-three percent of ART cycles were carried out among women aged 35–37, 19% among women aged 38–40, 10% among women aged 41–42, and 10% among women older than 42.

Number of live-birth deliveries to women using ART older than 42 in 2007: 4,134

How did the types of ART cycles used in the United States in 2006 differ among women of different ages?
Figure 4 shows that, in 2006, the type of ART cycles varied by the woman’s age. The vast majority (96%) of women younger than 35 used their own eggs, whereas only 4% used donor eggs. In contrast, 21% of women aged 41 to 42 and more than half (55%) of women older than 42 used donor eggs. Across all age groups, more ART cycles using fresh eggs or embryos were performed than cycles using frozen embryos.

Number of live-birth deliveries to women using Donor Egg older than 42 in 2004: 2,274

So the updated quote becomes:
"In 2007, there were more than 105,000 births in the United States to women ages 40 through 44, and over 7,349 to women 45 to 54. In 2007, there were 2,274 live births to women over 42, using donor eggs."

Quadruplet pregnancy in a 51-year-old menopausal woman

Thursday, February 26, 2009
A quadruplet pregnancy occurred in a woman 51 years of age following oocyte donation and embryo transferDepartment of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Southern California School of Medicine, Los Angeles.

A quadruplet pregnancy occurred in a woman 51 years of age following
oocyte donation and embryo transfer. Successful pregnancy occurred following two previously unsuccessful attempts.

The patient underwent a
selective reduction of her pregnancy to two fetuses at approximately 13 weeks gestational age. Her pregnancy continued uneventfully and she underwent the delivery of two viable infants at 38 weeks gestational age by Caesarean section.

This case represents the first
quadruplet pregnancy to be established in a woman of 50 years of age or older. It illustrates both the benefits and risks of oocyte donation to women of advanced reproductive age.

Had our 3rd girl last week at 51

Wednesday, July 23, 2008
I am 51 and my husband is 51. We just had our third girl last week with a fairly short labor, and she is beautiful and healthy.

Our other two children are age 19 and 23, so this is like starting out all over. This baby was an initial surprise, but we were blessed with a healthy pregnancy.

I did decide to do the amnio to ease any worry, and was surprised that it wasn't painful either. Elise Marie is a blessing, and her sisters are thrilled. Fresh papaya helps with the indigestion.

Just passing through, and saw your post. I am pregnant with my 9th and am 45 years old. How many children do you have? I have 8.

How is this pregnancy for you? Are you finding it hard to stay awake? Well, hope all is going well. Glad for this site.

Dr informed her she was 7m pregnant at 54

Thursday, June 19, 2008
I found this at Fertile Heart today:

DON'T LOSE HOPE! Here's a great story from an autobiography called Because They Hate, by Brigitte Gabriel. On page 4 of the book, Gabriel says her parents tried for twenty years to have a child.

One day her mother noticed a swelling in her abdomen and feared it was a tumor. The doctor informed her she was 7 months pregnant! She was 54 years old. Her husband was 60.

Moms in 50's cope as well as young women

Friday, June 13, 2008
Mothers in their 50's 'cope as well as young women'. More than 22,000 women over 40 gave birth last year, including around 900 aged over 45. In 1995 there were only 11,000 new mothers in their 40's.

4537~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I work with a lady (Kathy) who came to me the other day, and told me to not give up on TTC [trying to conceive].

Her sister in-law, who is 44, sat the family down to inform them that she went to the Doctor after 12 months of thinking she was in full blown menopause having no period. She was afraid that she had a tumor growing because her stomach was getting more and more swollen, thinking she was for sure going to die.

She and her husband had tried for 24 years to have a baby. Her Doctor told her to give up, so they did. Well, when she went to the Doctor he started running tests, and BFP [big fat positive - positive pregnancy test]!

Well this weekend she has a normal healthy baby girl, that gives me so much hope now! Girls, we all can do it! I just wanted to share this with all of you.

The new mother will be 45 in a couple of weeks. Kim

1y old triplets by IVF at 53

Thursday, May 29, 2008
One of my father's cousins has 1 year old triplets that were the product of IVF [in vitro fertilization] ; she is 53.

Granted, she did not just have sex and get pregnant, but those three babies all came from her own egg(s).

4509~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

It happened to one of my mom's co-workers. At age 51, she became accidentally pregnant the 100% natural way. She actually became pregnant through a Tubal Ligation and everything.

She ended up carrying the baby to term, and is now a mother to a baby AND a grandmother to a baby

We shouldn't assume every older mother did DE

Monday, May 26, 2008
We shouldn't be making assumptions that every older mother did donor egg, nor should we put too much hope in stories of much older women conceiving with their own eggs.

Look at the trends, and make your own decision about how long you want to fight the trend by trying with your own eggs, vs. deciding that the time has come to accept that the odds are just so stacked against you that you must move on to other alternatives.

Remember, too, that is really is not all "age related." I apparently lost my egg quality in my late 20's, as do some women. Others retain their fertility into their 50's.

An Israeli RE [reproductive endocrinologist] named Neri Laufer just discovered a gene in certain women that corresponds to later fertility. He was fascinated by the number of older pregnant women coming into the hospital for delivery.

You can google his name if you want to read about it. His group included women up into their early 50's. So much for any stats showing that NO women conceive in this age group!

4503~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

For those who just can't let go of the belief that all pregnant women over 45 must have used donor eggs, consider the population that Laufer studied. These were mostly, if not all, ultra-religious women for whom DE [donor eggs] would have been prohibited.

Imagine you have 10 kids already, you're living on government assistance and still exist below the poverty line, donor egg is not offered in your country, and your religious leader forbids the procedure anyway.

Now you tell me -- all these women secretly squirreled away thousands of dollars, disappeared from their communities for a couple of weeks to go to the Ukraine, defied their religious teachings, all in an effort to get pregnant with baby #11? Use your common sense!

The same can be applied to the Native American women living on reservations. Many have a lot of kids already and can't afford groceries let alone donor egg IVF cycles. The problem with middle and upper class American women like us is that we think we are representative of every group (and our RE's [reproductive endocrinologist] promote that thinking too, because they are victims of the same egocentric system).

If it becomes impossible for us to conceive after age 43, well, then, that must be true of everyone. Only it's not true. It's really not even true for our demographic.

RE's choose to present certain information based on the context. When they are counseling a 40 yr old with high FSH [follicle stimulating hormone] about her treatment options, of course they are going to highlight fertility trends in the general population and the success rates of certain treatment options because this is what is relevant to her. The goal is to get her a baby, not turn her into a rare statistic.

She has to make an informed decision based on medical facts as to what will give her the best odds of success. After age 40 and with high FSH, that's donor egg.

But if you ask that same doctor in another context, say, a conversational context, about much older women conceiving, he will concede that yes, it is absolutely possible and does happen, though not as often as we would like.

If he subscribes to the notion that no women get pregnant naturally after 45, then he's an idiot and you should get another doctor -- it means he's not up on basic information in his field.

52y patient 12w pregnant with own eggs

Sunday, May 25, 2008
I have just got back from my 2 weekly trip to my chinese doctor in London. She ONLY deals with fertility issues - her whole practise is geared to helping patients to try to get pregnant.

One of her nurses told me that they have currently got a 52 year old patient that is 12 weeks pregnant. I said 'oh must be DE [donor egg]', but they assured me that no, it was not and it was her own eggs! Amazing!

4501~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I have a family member who is a medical doctor for Indian Health Service. She serves indigent Native American women. I can tell you that these women are not spending 30K to do donor egg, nor are they traveling to Spain and the Ukraine for bargain basement DE [donor egg] cycles (something they still wouldn't be able to afford!)

She said it is not uncommon at all to have women between 44 and 52 delivering a baby. Of course, they are not the majority; the majority of women who deliver babies are in their twenties. Certainly fertility declines with age, and no one is arguing that.

Miracle for mum at 51

Saturday, May 10, 2008

JENNY Harte gave birth to her children at 47 and 51 after undergoing IVF treatmentJENNY Harte is a miracle mum. She gave birth to her children at 47 and 51 after undergoing IVF treatment – amazingly, at that age, using her own eggs – to conceive Holly, 7, and Jackson, 4.

She beat incredible odds. Women over 43 are given an IVF success chance of less than 2 per cent.
Of women who gave birth in Queensland in 2006, less than 1 per cent were over 45.

Fertility specialists say the children, born healthy after normal pregnancies, are "little miracles".

For Jenny and husband Steve, who live on the Brisbane northside, their children are simply a blessing.

"At my age, it is almost unheard of," she said. "We have two of the most absolutely beautiful children."

Queensland Fertility Group director and leading IVF specialist David Molloy said it was equivalent to a "major Casket win".

"She's been incredibly lucky – your chance of getting second division in Lotto would be higher," Dr Molloy said. "I would think only one or two women in Queensland would have given birth who are over 50."

He said the chances of having a child with Down Syndrome was 100-1 for women over 42, but jumped to 20-1 for women over 48.

Mrs Harte, a part-time pharmacist, now 55, and her husband, 52, who works at Brisbane Airport, say they feel "incredibly blessed" to be parents so late in their lives.

But as their own siblings watch their children go through university, the Hartes have been hit by the reality they may not live to see their own grandchildren.

Their path to parenthood is one of courage, patience and enduring love.

"I was 41 when I got married and that is past the use-by date," Mrs Harte told The Sunday Mail.

"I have always desperately, desperately wanted children and the GP said, 'Straight to IVF'.

"I fell pregnant on the first cycle we had but we lost it. It was a hard road after that . . . a horrible five years of ups and downs and disappointment and nearly losing my marriage."

The couple endured 11 IVF cycles and 13 months with a naturopath before Holly was born. "I was on a donor egg program. When I rang up to tell them I was pregnant but to leave my name on the list, they said my turn was up for an egg.

"After we had Holly we went to a counsellor and decided it would be worse if we didn't try for another baby, and tried once, and fell pregnant with Jackson straight away."

As older parents, Mrs Harte said they had to live with assumptions from strangers and, at first, from younger mothers at school.

"I was with Holly under the beach shower on Stradbroke and a bloke walking past said, 'Good on ya, Granny'.

"I just laughed. I have a great sense of humour. I am 55 but I feel 35 and I don't think I look 55."

While she is yet to meet another "new mum" in her 50s, she has plenty of friends with kids.

"I have a very young attitude. I don't want my kids to suffer because I am older. If they want me to chase them around the park I will – maybe not so enthusiastically," she laughed.

"I was a bit concerned about acceptance by other mothers.

"When I took Holly to preschool I was 51 and the other mothers all thought I was her nanny. Now we all go to coffee and go on holidays together."

Maturity as parents also means financial security, but there is always the reality of not seeing her grandchildren.

"We are financially stable, we invested well, and we are more settled and we love taking the kids on holidays. Life is pretty good. I have an 81-year-old mother and three siblings and I won't be around when Holly is 55, and I won't be able to see the grandchildren.

"But that is life and it makes me a bit sad."

Mr Harte, equally overwhelmed by love for his children, says his biggest fear is dying and leaving his kids behind: "I'm 52, and if I get to 'three score and 10', I have another 18 years.

"I might not see Holly's children. That is my goal in life – to stay alive long enough to see them. But longevity isn't a big thing in my family.

"I know Jenny will be there for them and I will hang in for as long as I can. That is the plan."

Peta Clacherty, who is president of an IVF support organisation, Friends of Queensland Fertility Group, described the Hartes' success as a "miracle".

"A lot of people have been trying for over 10 years and I know a lady who has been doing it for 17 years," Ms Clacherty said.

"I cannot believe it.

"I know how hard it is for me to get up in the middle of the night (to look after children) but good luck to her."

Dr Molloy said Mrs Harte's case was one of the oldest pregnancies in Queensland. Reproductive ageing is becoming a major issue as more and more women have had to put their families on hold, he said.

"There is a small but increasing number of patients.

"It just goes to show it isn't over until the last egg is gone."

A 50-year-old woman has become Britain's oldest mother of triplets in what is described by her gynaecologist as "the chance of the century".

Sue Green from Peterborough, Cambridgeshire gave birth to triplets Oliver, Aaron, and Samuel, on 8 November last year, nine weeks early.

The multiple birth makes Mrs Green the second oldest mother of triplets in the world, after a 57-year-old Italian woman who gave birth in 1994.

What I would like to say to you all is that I am 43 today! Yup Happy Birthday to me. That’s not it though.

I am 32 weeks pregnant. After a hell ride which I know you have all been through yourselves. I fell pregnant after going to an acupuncturist/herbs and Reflexology.

I just want to say IT CAN HAPPEN!! AND YOU ARE NOT TOO OLD!

If you haven’t gone through menopause, YOU CAN FALL PREGNANT.

4434~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

On top of that we had a family member conceive after 45, so I feel they used up our family luck.

This was her first baby at 48

Wednesday, May 7, 2008
Today I had the privilege to care for a mom who was 48 year young. She looked incredible and this was her first baby. She said she had decided to get very fit, and then she discovered she was pregnant. She did not have any issues with her pregnancy, and she has a beautiful baby girl.

It was so nice to see this, believe me I felt much more secure knowing she was raising a child than I did with the 16 year old mom down the hall. Older mom's may get a lot of slack, but let's face it they are better prepared to be moms.

4416~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I have heard stories of even spontaneous people getting pregnant from my friends and relatives, but I never met the ladies personally.

I practice NFP [natural family planning] . I am 50 myself, and would like another blessing.

My NFP instructor (who is also a nurse) said she had a lady age 50 deliver several years ago her 7th child, very healthy baby girl. This one I trust the most as it was told me by a medical professional (spontaneous pregnancy), so the age would be right.

4417~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My friend said she used to live in these apartments with an elderly lady a few years ago - the elderly lady's niece gave birth to twins at age 54 - the elderly who was about 80 something, and she thought it was spontaneous as they had older children, but could have been DE [donor egg]. Babies were both healthy.

4418~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My Dad (aged 85) remembers a neighbour lady having a child in her early 50's when he was a child (this would have been in the 1930's before DE [donor egg] )

4419~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My mother-in-law remembered a former neighbour of hers having a baby at 50 - this woman and her (older) daughter were pregnant at the same time.

My grandmother had her last one at 45

Saturday, April 26, 2008
Well, my grandmother had 3 children in her 40’s. One at 40, one at 43 and then last one at 45.

If someone thinks she must have used donor egg IVF [in vitro fertilization], I'd like for them to explain how. After all, there was no IVF back then in the 1950's and early 1960's.

I would believe her my mom had a pregnancy in her forties. Forty is not that old any more it is completely plausible.

4377~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~

Today I met a woman who is 51 years old, and pregnant with twins. She was not planning this pregnancy and already has a 25, 19, and 16 with her husband.

She said that she thought she had cancer, and found out she is pregnant. She told me that she cried for the first four months and has only recently accepted that she is about to do it all over again!!

She also decided that she would rather have twins, than find out she has cancer. So it really can happen!!!

4378~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~@~~~

My mom's friend years back got preggo at 51 with twins, and delivered very healthy babies. The babies are now in their teens!

I started TTC [trying to conceive] when I was 41, and have gotten pregnant 4 out of 5 times during the spring - 3 times in April - 02,03,04, 1 during May 05, and 1 in Aug 02.

I have a healthy active 27 month old daughter, who was born in Jan 05 when I was 44. - Julie
