Shock birth baby home after 6 wks in hospital

Friday, March 11, 2011
Anita Arora, mom at 46A baby born 10 weeks premature after his mother was told by doctors she was suffering from the early menopause has come home from hospital.

Matthew Arora was born on Christmas day 2010 after his mother, Anita Arora, 46, was rushed to hospital two days earlier after she found out she was pregnant.

After weeks of hospital care, he finally arrived in his family’s Southfields home on February 17 to live with his mum, dad, and two siblings for the first time and is progressing well.

Mrs Arora said: “It is very nice to finally have the whole family at home, and he is getting on very well with his brother and sister."

The Wandsworth Guardian revealed earlier this year how Mrs Arora claimed she was told on numerous occasions she was not pregnant by her GPs, with them diagnosing her with the early menopause.

It is just menopause - Mother at 46

Saturday, January 8, 2011
It is just menopause - Mother at 46A mother gave birth to a baby boy after doctors repeatedly assured her she was going through the menopause.

Anita Arora, 46, said the child almost died in her womb after her suspicions that she was pregnant were ignored.

Her son, Matthew, was delivered in a life-saving operation on Christmas Day – just two days after she found out she was expecting.

The infant, who was two months premature, would have died if surgeons had not delivered him immediately because of problems with the placenta.

She said: ‘I told them five months ago I thought I was pregnant. My periods had stopped and I was gaining weight. I asked whether it was possible, but they told me not to worry, it was just my age.’

Mrs Arora, a post office manager, and her driving instructor husband Kanti, 48, already have two children – Neil, 15, and Kamya, 13.

Mandy Parry, 46, 7 cycles of IVF, 5 attempts at donor egg insemination

Sunday, October 10, 2010
Mandy Parry, 46, 7 cycles of IVF, five attempts at donor egg insemination'
'We followed seven cycles of IVF and five attempts at donor egg insemination'

Mandy Parry, 46, is a teacher and lives in Bristol with husband Mark, 47, a community safety officer, and their five-month-old daughter Violet. Mandy says:

Having been through seven years of gruelling, heartbreaking fertility treatment, I’d urge any women thinking about delaying motherhood not to, for their own sakes.

I’d have loved children in my early 30s but I didn’t meet the right man, Mark, until I was 39.

When we started trying for a family six months later I kept miscarrying and discovered that my eggs were no longer healthy.

Then followed seven cycles of IVF and five attempts at donor egg insemination in South Africa before I finally had Violet in May this year.

We spent £50,000 — the equity from the house I sold when I met Mark and moved in with him — and it was emotionally and physically draining.

It was scary finding out I was pregnant last year, because I’d been pregnant four times before and lost all of them in the first three months.

I spent the whole pregnancy waiting for something bad to happen.

Mark has three children from his first marriage, but he wanted a baby as much as I did.

It’s weird to think that when he was a father of three in his 20s, I was young, free, single and partying in London. With hindsight, he feels he was too young to truly appreciate his children then.

The advantage of having a baby at 46 is that I’ve got the support of a wonderful, mature man. We’re financially secure and feel safe and stable in our marriage.

I don’t worry about being an older mum in terms of being around for her future. My dad was 44 when I was born and mum was 36, so I grew up with older parents. And I’ve got as much energy as any other mum.

I’ve got a few friends who feel it’s immoral to have a baby in your late 40s, but they know how much I’d have loved to have had a child years ago and what a battle we’ve been through to have Violet.

Whether we’ll have another child is a sore point. Mark thinks we should count our blessings, but we’ve got seven more embryos in South Africa that we’ve paid for, so the temptation for me is to try for another baby.

Twin boys for couple who spent 25 years and £100,000 trying to conceive

Thursday, January 14, 2010
Twin boys for mom, 46 years oldThe Wards spent around £100,000 and 25 years trying desperately for children of their own, and were on the verge of giving up when Mrs Ward finally fell pregnant - with twins.

Yesterday the proud new parents said they had no regrets at the astronomical expense of their quest to be a family as they showed off two-week-old boys Ben and Walker to the world.

Mrs Ward, 46, a nurse, said: "When I held them for the first time my eyes just filled up with tears."

Pregnant marathon athlete

Thursday, July 30, 2009
April Noan, 47, eight months pregnantA 46-year-old woman in her eight month of pregnancy took part in a marathon recently held in Boston (the USA). She covered 42 km within seven hours.

New York resident April Noan, who is to become 47 in several weeks, said her doctors and organizers of the marathon allowed her to participate in the heat. What is more interesting, the woman does not understand, why people make so much fuss about her deed. Her opinion is, pregnancy is not a disease. Women in past centuries treated pregnancy especially seriously only when it came to its end.

New mothers and menopause

Thursday, May 14, 2009
menopausal new momsHaving worked long and hard to get pregnant myself, I was prepared for some of the “side effects” of pregnancy: morning sickness, swollen ankles, and gestational diabetes. However, I was not prepared for the simultaneous upheaval of my confused 46-year-old uterus, which didn’t know whether it was coming or going.

Yet, despite all the challenges faced by the menopausal mom, I think I speak for most if not all, when I say the good far outweighs the bad. The stages of motherhood and menopause are significant passages faced by many. Having experienced some of each, I can honestly say the birth of my daughter makes the onslaught of menopause much more palatable. Because, while my physical body is fighting the inevitable aging process, the experiences I’m sharing with my daughter make me feel younger every day. Still, whenever I hear those 20-something new moms complaining about the perils of motherhood, I can’t help but think, “You should try this when your 50, sister.”

My son has Down’s syndrome but I never regret having him

Friday, April 17, 2009
problem pregnancyJulie Cresswell, 46, lives in Nottingham with children, Holly, seven, and Theodore, 10 months. She also has Amelia, 19, and James, 17.

I wasn’t really “with” Theodore’s dad and when I discovered I was pregnant, I decided I could cope alone.

And as I watched this little thing kicking inside me at my 12-week scan I was filled with excitement for the future.

Suddenly, the sonographer said she needed a second opinion. There was a problem with my baby’s lungs.

Because I’m over 40, Down’s syndrome was something I’d considered. But I didn’t want them to look for it because it wouldn’t change anything.

The consultant explained my son had fluid on the lungs and could have Down’s syndrome.

He said I should consider abortion but I’d already made a decision to have this baby and no disability would change that.

I had to be scanned every six weeks and termination was often mentioned but I refused.

I tried to be positive and friends were supportive. Amelia followed the Down’s syndrome storyline on EastEnders, which helped her understand the condition. I read a lot and was open with Holly about it. If we saw a disabled child she’d say: “Our baby might be like that.”

At 33 weeks, Theodore was born by caesarean and put in neonatal intensive care.

I was given a picture of him. Then I knew for sure he had Down’s syndrome. He had the symptomatic gap between his toes I’d read about.

He had blood transfusions and so much fluid drained at one point his lungs collapsed and I nearly lost him.

Today, he has bowel problems and gastric reflux so is often sick. At nearly a year he’s only just sitting up. He can’t feed himself but he’s making good progress, though he’ll always be behind.

People often stare and at some baby groups mothers move their children away. There’s a group at the hospital especially for babies with disabilities and I get a lot of support there, and Holly is so helpful.

Some days fear takes over. Being an older mum, I worry what will happen to Theodore if I die. I worry about his education and long-term health, too. But, despite it all, I never regret my decision to have him.

Julie is supported by Contact a Family, which organises events and workshops, and campaigns for the rights of families with disabled children. Freephone 0808 808 3555.

Time to update our over 40 Birth Statistics Quote

Wednesday, March 25, 2009
It's time to update this quote:

"In 2005, there were more than 104,000 births in the United States to women ages 40 through 44, and over 6,500 to women 45 and older. In 2004, there were 1,786 live births to women over 42, using donor eggs."

Checking the 2007 birth stats today at the CDC and I found:
All races and origins
40–44 years................. 105,071 live births
45–54 years................ 7,349 live births

Next I went to SART, who has the 2007 IVF and Donor Egg rates in the US:

Fresh Embryos From Non-Donor Oocytes
Number of cycles : (40-42) 8,865 (43-44) 5,749
Percentage of cycles resulting in live births : (40-42) 11.7 (43-44) 4.6
Total live births : (40-42) 1,037.2 (43-44) 264.5

TOTAL (40-44) : 1,301.7

Thawed Embryos From Non-Donor Oocytes
Number of transfers : (40-42) 1,043 (43-44) 652
Percentage of transfers resulting in live births : (40-42) 20.7 (43-44) 14.6
Total live births : (40-42) 215.9 ( 43-44) 95.2

TOTAL (40-44) : 311

Total number of women conceiving from IVF (non-DE) (40-44) : 1,613

Donor Oocytes (all ages)
Number of transfers : (Fresh Embryos) 9,575 (Thawed Embryos) 5,087
Percentage of transfers resulting in live births : (Fresh) 55.2 (Thawed) 31.7
Total Live Births : (Fresh) 5,285.4 (Thawed) 1612.6

TOTAL births by Donor Egg (all ages) : 6,898

Number of live-birth deliveries resulting from ART cycles started in 2006: 41,343

How old were the women who used ART in the United States in 2006?
Figure 3: The average age of women using ART services in 2006 was 36. The largest group of women using ART services were women younger than 35, representing 39% of all ART cycles carried out in 2006. Twenty-three percent of ART cycles were carried out among women aged 35–37, 19% among women aged 38–40, 10% among women aged 41–42, and 10% among women older than 42.

Number of live-birth deliveries to women using ART older than 42 in 2007: 4,134

How did the types of ART cycles used in the United States in 2006 differ among women of different ages?
Figure 4 shows that, in 2006, the type of ART cycles varied by the woman’s age. The vast majority (96%) of women younger than 35 used their own eggs, whereas only 4% used donor eggs. In contrast, 21% of women aged 41 to 42 and more than half (55%) of women older than 42 used donor eggs. Across all age groups, more ART cycles using fresh eggs or embryos were performed than cycles using frozen embryos.

Number of live-birth deliveries to women using Donor Egg older than 42 in 2004: 2,274

So the updated quote becomes:
"In 2007, there were more than 105,000 births in the United States to women ages 40 through 44, and over 7,349 to women 45 to 54. In 2007, there were 2,274 live births to women over 42, using donor eggs."

Pregnant at 46, completely unplanned

Sunday, September 28, 2008
My sister in law just told me that a woman who goes to her church got pregnant at 46 -- completely unplanned -- and delivered her beautiful and healthy baby a week ago!

No one even knew she was pregnant for the longest time. I guess she and her husband were kind of embarrassed (they already have two children, the youngest who is 20!) and didn't really mention it until the last couple months when she got really big.

I, of course, asked my sister in law the same question I always ask about women that age -- did this woman do in vitro or anything?

My sister-in-law laughed, and said, "Are you kidding? They thought she was going through menopause and she didn't realize she was pregnant till she started feeling "the signs" -- again, which she attributed to menopause -- and her doctor confirmed it.

4609~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

This is for every woman who wants a baby, and isn't sure if it's even possible, every woman who might be pregnant now and not sure if she wants a baby and every woman who just isn't sure that she will have the energy and strength to raise a baby after 40.

My grandmother had 12 children between 1932 and 1957. Her last was at age 45. Every one of them were healthy, uncomplicated births. Most were born at home with a midwife or the local country doctor attending. After being blessed as she was with the births of all these babies, came the raising of them. My grandmother worked from morning 'til night taking care of her home and family. She never complained. She always said she had a good life and felt blessed.

So just remember that women are AMAZING. Each and every one of us. We have an inner strength that sometimes we don't even realize we have. It's okay to be sad and blue sometimes, it's only natural, but never give up having hope and faith that whatever we want for our lives we can make come true and whatever life throws at us we'll be able to handle. - Rhonda

I'm 46 & just found out I'm pregnant

Tuesday, September 16, 2008
I am 46 and just found out I am pregnant. I also gave everything away to the Katrina effort. Then I jokingly said that just as soon as I gave everything away, I'll get pregnant.

We have two other kids, 8 and 6 and haven't used any birth control since the first one. We have been praying for another baby, and feel blessed to be pregnant again.

4593~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I was 44 when I had my daughter seven weeks ago. It wasn't planned at all, in fact, I was very upset at first when I found out I was pregnant.

I got used to the pregnancy, and fell in love with my daughter through all the ultrasounds I needed to have. I am just now beginning to feel more normal after having her...

It was so tiring when she was first born, and I suffered from PPD [post-partum depression], and she was so noisy when she slept! She is into more of a pattern now, and since being on medication, I feel and sleep much better too.

I will be 47 when the baby is born

Saturday, September 13, 2008
I was in your shoes about 6 weeks ago. I just turned 12 weeks today.

I am 46, going to be 47 when the baby is born, and already have 8 children, youngest of whom will be six. I sure thought I was done with all this!

I was shocked and not too happy for the first month, a little less shocked and a little more happy the second month. After the shock wears off, I think you will become more excited about the new life within you.

I too am very nervous about carrying a baby at this age, and also the repeat cesarean (this will be my 8th cesarean, and the last one was a little tougher to get over because of all the scar tissue and trouble getting Steven out). So I am very nervous about this one.

But I figure that God put me in this boat for a reason, and He will take care of me. Having faith is the only way to get through this life-altering experience, believe me!

4589~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I had my daughter November 29,05 and all went well. I was 44 when I had her.

The only difference for me was that I had so much scar tissue from my first c-section six years before, that my OB [obstetrician] had a harder time getting to her, and thus I had a little harder time recovering.

I had terrible post-partum depression with my son six years ago, and went through it again with this one.... but was more prepared and went on medication sooner.

My six year old was a great help to me, as I am sure your older children will be for you! Chloe is now 14 weeks old, and is a joy to have around.

I'm about 10w & turning 46 tomorrow

Friday, September 12, 2008
I'm about 10 weeks prego and turning 46 tomorrow. This is my 3rd pregnancy -- after 22 years. I have a daughter age 24 and son age 22.

First marriage lasted 15 years; then was unmarried since April 1996. Just got married 2nd time December 12th, '05.

My husband has no kids, so he is quite excited about this pregnancy. I have some anxiety; my kids are worried. I'm thinking about having some tests done - Rebecca

I'm 44 and starting on my sixth week. I have an 11 year old, a 15 year old and a 16 year old. I am not too nervous about it, I am trusting everything will be OK, but I really wish time would fly and I was at least over the first 12 weeks. I am unsure about doing testing on the baby.

I'm 48 with my 1st pregnancy

Friday, July 25, 2008
Hi ladies, I have you all beat! I'm 48 with my first pregnancy, my husband is 48 as well.

I am 14 weeks, feeling great, and either swimming 1500 or running a mile every other day. All the first round tests were normal, and my neonatologist does not recommend an amniocentesis. We are blessed and feel very lucky. It doesn't hurt to be extremely active all your life.... - Pamela

I had my 46th birthday on August 31, and have almost a month left in this pregnancy. This is only my second; my first was 13.5 years ago at 32. So far, everything has been well.

This time I had more indigestion, but not more aches and pains than the first. We weren't expecting this baby at all, and were a little upset at first until we realized what a real miracle it is for me to be pregnant in the first place.

I've gained less weight than with the first, although I started out a little heavier. I don't like having to see the fetal/maternal medicine doctor in addition to the regular OB/GYN.

At this age, some are so negative in spite of the relative health of me and the baby. I'm trusting God for a safe and healthy delivery in about a month.

Assumed at 46 I wouldn't conceive naturally

Thursday, June 26, 2008
Hello older Moms to be - I just found out I am pregnant, and what a surprise! I have two teenage children from a previous marriage and just assumed that at the ripe old age of 46 I wouldn't conceive naturally.

Well I did! Anyone as old as I am out there? I'm excited but scared.

4561~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I've posted before, but I am 44 and have been trying for the past few months using Follistim and an IUI [intra-uterine insemination].

We had our first IUI on 11/1 which wasn't successful. We had our second IUI on 11/25, and I took a pregnancy test yesterday morning which was positive -- and a second one last night (a different brand), and it also was positive.
