Almost 50 and I Want to Get Pregnant

Friday, October 15, 2010
Almost 50 and I Want to Get PregnantAs I checked out a tall, slim man in his thirties with salt and pepper hair at a Greenwich Village party, a lady astrologist a couple of years older than moi looked my way and said, "When we get to this age, we lose interest in men." I assume she believed I would agree with her reading of the situation, but I, a divorced, almost forty-nine-year old Jewish female from New York City, still have a seventy-year-old aunt who dates. I also contemplated how we women "peak" sexually in our forties, but I am one year away from, gulp, fifty. And the thing is, I want to be pregnant again. I already have an amazing twenty-three-year-old son, but I want a repeat performance.

Yes; even as most women my age throw in the hormonal towel, I find myself looking at guys much the way Samantha would in Sex In The City, sizing up men between 25 and 45 at the supermarket, the mall, the ballgame. Only I’m not looking for potential lovers, I’m looking for a baby daddy. Blue eyes or brown, balding or Kennedy-esque — I try to gaze right through their skin to see their very DNA.

My friends think I am off my rocker, that I should enjoy the empty nest and not make a syndrome out of it. They’re in the been-there/done-that phase, and those still interested in men go for the immediate gratification relationships and have no desire for long-term proposals. Not one friend will admit that maybe my pregnancy desires might be something she feels, too.

Scotlands oldest mum: I’ve always wanted children

Wednesday, March 24, 2010
Scotlands oldest mum - Ive always wanted childrenJuliet Le Page became Scotland’s oldest mother when she gave birth at 50. Having settled down with her husband Richard , who is ten years her junior, Juliet has always been determined to have children.

“I was quite a determined person, I’d met my husband and thought ' I really want to have a family with this man' ,” Juliet said. “I was pretty sure I wasn’t able to conceive naturally so it had to be some form of assisted conception.”

Due to her age, In Vitro Fertilisation or IVF as it is more commonly known was not a suitable option for Juliet; she then considered fertility treatment using a donor egg.

Woman, 49, oldest in-vitro pregnancy

Tuesday, November 24, 2009
MAKE WOMB: Births for over-45 women -- using their own eggs -- are being pioneered by Park Avenue doc John ZhangA Park Avenue fertility doctor has broken the age barrier for women longing to be moms.

Dr. John Zhang says a 49-year-old patient at his New Hope Fertility Center gave birth this month to a baby conceived with her own egg frozen at age 48 -- the oldest on record.

"She's beautiful and healthy," the jubilant mom e-mailed friends after delivering her long-awaited daughter. "She's definitely the love of our lives!"

The infant might have made history in the world of in-vitro fertilization, which kicked off in 1978 with baby Louise Brown.

"To the best of my knowledge, the oldest woman who has gotten pregnant from IVF with her own egg is 45," said Dr. Richard Paulson, a professor in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the University of Southern California, and a pioneer in the use of donor eggs.

Zhang, who opened his Upper East Side clinic in 2004, each year treats 60 to 80 women over 45 who want babies with their own eggs. Five to eight give birth each year, he said. He offers donor eggs as a "last resort." The oldest patient had twins at 52 from donor eggs.

Time to update our over 40 Birth Statistics Quote

Wednesday, March 25, 2009
It's time to update this quote:

"In 2005, there were more than 104,000 births in the United States to women ages 40 through 44, and over 6,500 to women 45 and older. In 2004, there were 1,786 live births to women over 42, using donor eggs."

Checking the 2007 birth stats today at the CDC and I found:
All races and origins
40–44 years................. 105,071 live births
45–54 years................ 7,349 live births

Next I went to SART, who has the 2007 IVF and Donor Egg rates in the US:

Fresh Embryos From Non-Donor Oocytes
Number of cycles : (40-42) 8,865 (43-44) 5,749
Percentage of cycles resulting in live births : (40-42) 11.7 (43-44) 4.6
Total live births : (40-42) 1,037.2 (43-44) 264.5

TOTAL (40-44) : 1,301.7

Thawed Embryos From Non-Donor Oocytes
Number of transfers : (40-42) 1,043 (43-44) 652
Percentage of transfers resulting in live births : (40-42) 20.7 (43-44) 14.6
Total live births : (40-42) 215.9 ( 43-44) 95.2

TOTAL (40-44) : 311

Total number of women conceiving from IVF (non-DE) (40-44) : 1,613

Donor Oocytes (all ages)
Number of transfers : (Fresh Embryos) 9,575 (Thawed Embryos) 5,087
Percentage of transfers resulting in live births : (Fresh) 55.2 (Thawed) 31.7
Total Live Births : (Fresh) 5,285.4 (Thawed) 1612.6

TOTAL births by Donor Egg (all ages) : 6,898

Number of live-birth deliveries resulting from ART cycles started in 2006: 41,343

How old were the women who used ART in the United States in 2006?
Figure 3: The average age of women using ART services in 2006 was 36. The largest group of women using ART services were women younger than 35, representing 39% of all ART cycles carried out in 2006. Twenty-three percent of ART cycles were carried out among women aged 35–37, 19% among women aged 38–40, 10% among women aged 41–42, and 10% among women older than 42.

Number of live-birth deliveries to women using ART older than 42 in 2007: 4,134

How did the types of ART cycles used in the United States in 2006 differ among women of different ages?
Figure 4 shows that, in 2006, the type of ART cycles varied by the woman’s age. The vast majority (96%) of women younger than 35 used their own eggs, whereas only 4% used donor eggs. In contrast, 21% of women aged 41 to 42 and more than half (55%) of women older than 42 used donor eggs. Across all age groups, more ART cycles using fresh eggs or embryos were performed than cycles using frozen embryos.

Number of live-birth deliveries to women using Donor Egg older than 42 in 2004: 2,274

So the updated quote becomes:
"In 2007, there were more than 105,000 births in the United States to women ages 40 through 44, and over 7,349 to women 45 to 54. In 2007, there were 2,274 live births to women over 42, using donor eggs."

49 year old woman pregnant with quads

Saturday, February 14, 2009
Dr Michael Kamrava performs an ultrasound on Nadya Suleman in 2006She was in her late 40s and wanted just one baby.

Now she's five months pregnant with quadruplets and hospitalized at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, according to several sources familiar with the situation.

The woman in the latest case arrived recently at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles for unspecified treatment but was transferred last week to County-USC Medical Center because she lacks insurance. Doctors placed her on bed rest until the birth of the babies, which could be two or three months from now.

The woman has three grown children from a previous marriage but wanted another child with her second husband, who is in his early 30s and doesn't have any children, sources said. She works as an apartment manager; her husband is a contractor.

She started fertility treatments seeking one baby, but after becoming pregnant with quadruplets, declined medical advice to reduce the number of fetuses, the sources said.

May be one of the oldest here at 50

Wednesday, September 10, 2008
Well, you beat me! I'm 45, due December 30. It's our sixth pregnancy, and this would be our fourth child. I hope things work out well for you. But I have to laugh -- to think that people have given ME a bad time about "having my own grandchildren! - Jill

4583~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Hi, I think I may be one of the oldest here! I'll be 50 in September and have just discovered I'm pregnant. Bit of a surprise, especially as I have a Mirena IUD which was supposed to stop that kind of thing. Early days yet, and I know that the risks of not going to term are high, but I'm still feeling curiously hyper!

Husband is 62 and stunned(!); this will be #5 for him and #3 for me - the others are 30, 27, 16 (girls) and 12 (boy).

Have just been to see the doctor whose jaw nearly hit the table when I told her. She's taken some blood for testing which may help to indicate whether it's an ectopic pregnancy. She'll take the Mirena out and give me a scan tomorrow.

I live in Gibraltar, a tiny relic of the British Empire hanging off the south coast of Spain. We moved here about 18 months ago from the UK. Maybe it's one of the benefits(?) of the "Mediterranean Diet"!

I'd been thinking that it would be nice to have some babies around - but I wanted grandchildren! - Pen

My cousin had her 4th--unplanned--at 48

Tuesday, June 3, 2008
I miscarried about a year and a half ago and just found out I'm pregnant (at 43 and 3 months).

My cousin by marriage just had her 4th child -- unplanned -- at 48. He's very healthy.

And the mother of a dear friend of mine had her 7th at 49, also unplanned and very healthy (now 20-something! and a grad of UC Berkeley).

We shouldn't assume every older mother did DE

Monday, May 26, 2008
We shouldn't be making assumptions that every older mother did donor egg, nor should we put too much hope in stories of much older women conceiving with their own eggs.

Look at the trends, and make your own decision about how long you want to fight the trend by trying with your own eggs, vs. deciding that the time has come to accept that the odds are just so stacked against you that you must move on to other alternatives.

Remember, too, that is really is not all "age related." I apparently lost my egg quality in my late 20's, as do some women. Others retain their fertility into their 50's.

An Israeli RE [reproductive endocrinologist] named Neri Laufer just discovered a gene in certain women that corresponds to later fertility. He was fascinated by the number of older pregnant women coming into the hospital for delivery.

You can google his name if you want to read about it. His group included women up into their early 50's. So much for any stats showing that NO women conceive in this age group!

4503~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

For those who just can't let go of the belief that all pregnant women over 45 must have used donor eggs, consider the population that Laufer studied. These were mostly, if not all, ultra-religious women for whom DE [donor eggs] would have been prohibited.

Imagine you have 10 kids already, you're living on government assistance and still exist below the poverty line, donor egg is not offered in your country, and your religious leader forbids the procedure anyway.

Now you tell me -- all these women secretly squirreled away thousands of dollars, disappeared from their communities for a couple of weeks to go to the Ukraine, defied their religious teachings, all in an effort to get pregnant with baby #11? Use your common sense!

The same can be applied to the Native American women living on reservations. Many have a lot of kids already and can't afford groceries let alone donor egg IVF cycles. The problem with middle and upper class American women like us is that we think we are representative of every group (and our RE's [reproductive endocrinologist] promote that thinking too, because they are victims of the same egocentric system).

If it becomes impossible for us to conceive after age 43, well, then, that must be true of everyone. Only it's not true. It's really not even true for our demographic.

RE's choose to present certain information based on the context. When they are counseling a 40 yr old with high FSH [follicle stimulating hormone] about her treatment options, of course they are going to highlight fertility trends in the general population and the success rates of certain treatment options because this is what is relevant to her. The goal is to get her a baby, not turn her into a rare statistic.

She has to make an informed decision based on medical facts as to what will give her the best odds of success. After age 40 and with high FSH, that's donor egg.

But if you ask that same doctor in another context, say, a conversational context, about much older women conceiving, he will concede that yes, it is absolutely possible and does happen, though not as often as we would like.

If he subscribes to the notion that no women get pregnant naturally after 45, then he's an idiot and you should get another doctor -- it means he's not up on basic information in his field.

52y patient 12w pregnant with own eggs

Sunday, May 25, 2008
I have just got back from my 2 weekly trip to my chinese doctor in London. She ONLY deals with fertility issues - her whole practise is geared to helping patients to try to get pregnant.

One of her nurses told me that they have currently got a 52 year old patient that is 12 weeks pregnant. I said 'oh must be DE [donor egg]', but they assured me that no, it was not and it was her own eggs! Amazing!

4501~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I have a family member who is a medical doctor for Indian Health Service. She serves indigent Native American women. I can tell you that these women are not spending 30K to do donor egg, nor are they traveling to Spain and the Ukraine for bargain basement DE [donor egg] cycles (something they still wouldn't be able to afford!)

She said it is not uncommon at all to have women between 44 and 52 delivering a baby. Of course, they are not the majority; the majority of women who deliver babies are in their twenties. Certainly fertility declines with age, and no one is arguing that.

Lady is 49 & just gave birth

Friday, May 23, 2008
Last night I went to my pre-admission appointment at the hospital where I will give birth. I commented on my age, and the midwife said "You're not old - we've got a lady in here right now who is 49 and just gave birth"

4496~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My mother in-law's one girlfriend had her first child (IVF [in vitro fertilization] I believe she did too) at 47.

Women been having babies for centuries - young to older ... Why should it be any different now-a-days, regarding your age? Safer now for them to have their bundles of joy ... and great help with the IVF advance new technologies

4497~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My birthday is on May 18. I'll be 45 and I've been feeling pretty old --especially on the Oct Due Date board, where most are much younger. -- Yof (16 weeks pregnant)

4498~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

The first thing you notice is that the birth rate for 45+ year olds were significantly high until the 1950's. I believe this was due to two factors -1 because it was normal to have large families in those days, and 2 because there wasn't any abortion clinics around at the time.

Another thing you ought to bare in mind is there WASN'T any fertility clinics around in those days. The birth rate obviously dropped for everybody between 1941 and 1942, because our men were away at war. The second thing you notice is the decline in the birth rate for those over 45 since the 1950's.

I personally believe that the decline is due to the society that we live in -1. because it is not so sociably acceptable to have large families these days, and 2. abortions are widely available for anyone who wants one (particularly for ladies over 45).

One of the most annoying things I hear is "you can't have a baby at your age because you are too old" or "you can't have a baby at your age because your eggs are too old"

The first question you've got to ask is 'how come so many ladies of my age had babies up until the 1950s' .......... kinda throws the 'old eggs' theory out the window, don't you think ladies!

4499~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

In an effort to teach us how faith works, Paul is going to recall one of the greatest miracles in the entire Bible. I am referring to the birth of Isaac. What makes his birth so special? Well, his daddy was 100 and his mother was 90 when he was born.

The Guinness Book of Records tells us that the oldest mother on record is one Ruth Alice Kistler. Mrs. Kistler gave birth to a daughter at the spry age of 57.

There is one report of a woman named Ellen Ellis who was said to be 72 in 1776 when her child was born. However, compared to Sarah, these women look like teenagers!

I'm 48 & 16 weeks pregnant

Monday, May 19, 2008
Try to look at the bright side, your odds are almost always in favour of a healthy baby.

I'm 48 and 16 weeks pregnant, and grateful that all is going well. I had a Nuchal Translucency Test at 12 weeks, which was very positive even though it's not 100% (about 95% I think).

Another scan due at 20 weeks. I've just got over the sickness which was bad enough since week 6, but my energy is as good as ever, especially since there's very little to carry yet. I wasn't overweight starting out which I think helps and I work from home, which helps a lot. So I'm optimistic about this unasked for gift -- it can be done.

4466~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I personally think if you are fit and healthy, age should be a secondary consideration. My friend's mum was 49 when she was born, and had another baby at 52, both perfectly healthy.

4467~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Hi everybody - great to hear some older mums-to-be and hopefuls.

I'm 46 and 22 weeks pregnant, and everything seems to be progressing nicely. Had my first little girl at 42, and she is perfect. Due in June - really looking forward to new addition to family.

Had nuchal scan at 13 weeks. This measures fat pad at back of baby's neck and provides risk factor for Downs and other chromosome disorders. It is very simple just involves a blood test and scan - nothing invasive.

Depending on outcome you will be offered amnio which has some risks. I had nuchal scan on both - this time odds went from 1 in 9 to 1 in 170 so I completely relaxed.

Also had miscarriage March 05 and May 06 at 8 and 9 weeks. Gynae did not make issue of age or discourage me from trying - so I say go for it.

4468~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Lynne Dusenberry, an anthropologist, tells of her teacher willing herself into a trouble-free menopause after having her last baby at 45.

4469~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I am 45, and just found out last week I am expecting. I was trying for the last few months, but no medical intervention. I visited my nurse practitioner in March, and she said she saw not reason I should have any trouble conceiving. Guess I didn't.

Lots of scary news and info out there. I hope all goes well.

My friend had her 1st baby at 45

Friday, May 16, 2008
My friend had her first baby at 45, conceived naturally.

A relative of my husband was the oldest woman ever to give birth at our local maternity hospital aged 49, again conceived naturally.

4461~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

One of my college roommates had her one and only baby quite late…. A result of waiting for the right moment to come, as well as unfortunate circumstances …..

She’s now almost 50 and her daughter is 4 1/2…… Technically old enough to be a grandmother!

4462~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My mother had her last healthy baby at 45 and her last pregnancy at 47!

I have friends who had babies in their 40's - one started at 42 and had 3 one year after the other (all normal and healthy).

4463~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I'm 43 and am 35 weeks pregnant with our first child. I was quite fit and healthy at the beginning of the pregnancy and this has stayed with me throughout.

On the scale of things, I've had a lovely pregnancy so far: just occasional nausea in the first trimester, one night of acid reflux in the second and a week of leg cramps in the third.

I'm as anxious as any other first timer, but more grounded than ever before in myself. I love my husband and we're both delighted to be having a baby. His support means everything right now.

4464~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I don’t think you are old at 43. My God, my friend's mum had her last at 55, and that is the honest truth. She had a beautiful girl, and was all healthy.

Then my younger friend had a Down Syndrome baby, and she was 20. So please, I really don’t believe in this **** that the older you are, the more sick your child can be .

49 year old had twins

Wednesday, May 14, 2008
So far, the women I've cared for who delivered over age 40 have all done great — including the 49 year old who had twins! - Cynthia B. Flynn, CNM, PhD

My last doula client had her first baby at 43 years old. She was physically fit (an avid swimmer) and a very type A personality. A couple of days before her due date, my client had about a 5-hour, uncomplicated labor!

They were at home, and contractions were 5 minutes apart when they called me. They called back 10 minutes later to say that contractions were 2-3 minutes apart, and to meet them at the hospital.

When I arrived a half hour after their call, the nurse was just pulling her hand out and said, "just a lip"! The mom pushed for about 45 minutes.

4452~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I assisted at a wonderful birth of a mom having her fifth baby at 45 years old. She worked very hard to keep her nutritional status and fluid intake great, used high-quality supplements, exercised regularly, and so forth.

Of course you must trust your midwife with all your heart, and know what her skill level is to work with the special body you have been entrusted with.

4453~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I had an oops baby at 45. Had 4 others at the normal age, then when my youngest was 17 1/2 I had my 5th. Didn't show until 7 months and didn't know I was pregnant until 7 months.

My daughter found out she was pregnant with her first the same time I found out about this one. (I have 4 boys and only 1 girl) They are 6 months apart. I and am looking for any advice on "normal" people having babies at 45 years old.

4454~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I hope you read my birthday greeting to my last birth child, Maddy. I gave birth to her when I was weeks away from my 45th birthday. She is the absolute joy of my life.

My oldest daughter Samantha was pregnant with her first when I gave birth to my #8, Jonny - as well as when I announced my pregnancy with Madeleine. The aunts and uncles and nephews and niece play together all the time - it's a wonderful, rich life for them. - Barbara

Aunt Kate was in her mid to late-40's

Tuesday, May 13, 2008
Anyway, on the pregnancy deniers, I have a funny story. My great Aunt Kate married in her 20's, and tried very hard to get pregnant. Never did, and she and my uncle Jimmy just gave up, assumed it wasn't in the cards for them. They were always sad about it.

This was a long long time ago, so there wasn't much doctors could do for infertility. Then when my Aunt Kate was in her mid to late-40's, her period stopped. She assumed, reasonably so, that it was menopause. She and her doctor attributed her other physical symptoms to menopause also. But then when her stomach began to swell, they feared cancer. It never occurred to them that she was pregnant. Not after all those years, and not at her age.

It was only when she felt the baby, my cousin Denise, kicking that she figured it out. And I don't think she realized what she was feeling until she was quite far along. It you weren't looking for it, you would not necessarily be aware of a baby kicking for quite a while, I think. That was well over 50 years ago.

4446~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Sometimes life surprises us, my aunt's kids were grown and having kids of their own, when she thought she hit menopause and really was pregnant. She is enjoying this child more than she ever could when she was young, and had her first two.

4447~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I have known 3 people who had tubals, and years later got pregnant unexpectedly.

I have known 3 women going through menopause (not finished yet), getting pregnant when they thought they couldn’t. My grandmother had her last baby at 45 because of this.

And MANY women believed dumb doctors when they told us there is no chance in hell you will get or ever get pregnant again. I was one of them that was told I would never have children without a chemistry lab. They were wrong.

4448~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

The oldest woman I have delivered was 44 years old, and it was her first. She did great. I am in great shape and so is my husband. I want to know what others have experienced with women this age.

I was pregnant five months ago, but had a very early miscarriage, so I know I could get pregnant. I am now using over-the-counter Progesterone cream to help maintain my hormones. What experience do others have with women in their 40's having babies?

4449~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

A friend delivered baby number 13 at home at 43 years old, with no complications. If you saw her, you'd swear she was younger than 35!

7 mths pregnant in mid to late 40's

Sunday, May 11, 2008
Ladies, thought I'd share at this board...

I was in grocery store last month and at the coffee counter I can't help overhearing this woman (not a Young Woman at all) going on and on about baby this, baby that, we'll need this, we have that...

I start looking at her and really can't tell at all if she is pregnant or newly pregnant or what?! She is gabbing to a friend quite loudly and saying stuff like, "with our history" etc. and I start worrying for her - thinking oh no, she is newly pregnant with some treatment and she is feeling so confident... What if something doesn't go right - you know what I mean, just sort of wondering at her situation.

Well, I get up to the counter and the lady serving the counter says to me, "Quite a surprise for her...she used to work here and just found out she's 7 mos. pregnant!" I'm totally shocked and the lady goes on to tell me the rest -"Her and her husband tried for over 10 years and decided to give up, then she starts having these twisty feelings in her stomach, going thru her change of life she figures, goes and gets an ultrasound done, and she is actually nearly 7 months pregnant!"

Can you believe this!! ?? Well, I nearly didn't but on my way out, the pregnant lady comes walking in with her ultrasound pictures and I just have to stop and say something so I do, she ends up showing me these pictures of a perfectly formed baby in the ultrasound and truly about 6 3/4 mos pregnant!!

I say to her, 'Did you really not know you were pregnant?" & she says, "No, I've never been pregnant, didn't know what it would feel like, I've never been a slim person, so didn't notice any extra weight going on either!!! -" she says, "I wouldn't believed it myself if the u/s tech hadn't shown me the screen and these pictures!" --

Isn't this an AMAZING STORY!! Here she must of been in her late or mid-40's to be thinking she was going into the change of life and now she is sanding down a dresser set, and gathering baby gear!!

God is Amazing and that story and happening has been a little boost for me over the course of the summer as my husband and I struggle along for TTC#2.... [trying to conceive]

4436~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Definitely possible!!! My mom had a child at 46, so I know it can be done!!!

4437~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My name is Lisa, and I’m 45 and 13 weeks pregnant. What a surprise!! It’s like a new world, although I have two daughters 22 and 19.

4438~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My RE [reproductive endocrinologist] had an embryo transfer earlier that day, and it was the wildest thing. The woman was 47 years old (dear lord -- even older than me!) and was using donor eggs from her 40-year-old sister!!!!

I said, "40 years old? Are those eggs even any good? Aren't donors usually in their 20's or their 30's at the oldest?" He said that this donor's eggs were just exceptionally good and she was incredibly fertile -- she produced 21 GOOD eggs and they put the three best ones into her 47 year old sister.

I guess the point of this story is that we hear all the time that we're too old, we can't have babies, our babies will have 3 heads and we're basically horrible, stupid women for even thinking about getting pregnant... As Carol pointed out with her pregnancy, as my friend proved with her pregnancy and perfect birth (at almost 44) and as my RE's story proves... There are exceptions to the rule.

Why can't WE be those exceptions, too? Trust me, I'm a fact type of gal, and I know the odds are against us. But if I'd listened to Newsweek's stupid predictions twenty years ago, I would've had a better chance of getting hit by an airplane than getting married like I did at 41! :-)

4439~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Pregnant at 47 – Even With Blocked Tubes - I’m 47 and both myself and my husband had fertility problems, I have a blocked fallopian tube and my husband has a low sperm count.

We were desperate for a child, and felt that time was running out for us – I’m going to be 50 in two years and 3 months! We tried ICSI [Intracytoplasmic sperm injection] treatment, but after 4 tries they failed. We even tried adoption but they turned us down.

We saw your website and decided to give your methods a try. My husband got involved too, and after 3 months of doing everything you’ve said, we have finally conceived.

Thanks for being there for us. - Penelope Costa

2 miscarriages, then pregnant at 43

Friday, May 2, 2008
My friend had two miscarriages and then got pregnant at 43 (naturally, with no medical assistance) and delivered a healthy baby a couple months shy of her 44th birthday.

4391~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I was 48 when I got pregnant, 49 when I delivered a healthy baby boy on January 10th. I wasn't trying to get pregnant, thought I was past the point, hense discontinuing birth control.

And surprise!!! Baby on the way. Oldest 27, then 25, 16 and 3 months. Good Luck, it can happen. -- Karla

4392~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I had an amnio [amniocentesis] done as well. It was quite painful, and seem to last very long, that needle stuck in. But on the other hand, I very much enjoyed watching the baby floating around, and he stayed a long distance away from the needle.

The next 10 days before I got the results were nerve-breaking, but when the results were fine and it was a boy, I also felt very relieved and the doctor told me that I should relax now because it was a healthy pregnancy. It surely helped to make my pregnancy a great and cheerful event. -- Erna, 48 yrs old, mother of Rens, 1 year old

4393~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

But as far as your RE's [reproductive endocrinologist] opinion about women over 43 getting pregnant: I can tell you my mother got pregnant at 45 -- a smoker since she was 17, a two-drink-a-day drinker -- one day she just decided it was time for another child.

Second month of trying and bingo! My sister was conceived. My mother weighed 87 pounds at the time and we were living in a remote Pacific Island country very close to the equator, and with no car. I remember my mother taking the bus into town in 90-degree weather when she was eight and half months pregnant and schlepping back a week's worth of groceries on her own, while we were off at school.

She had a local doctor, who she said was her best OB/GYN [obstetrician/gynecologist] ever, but believe me, she was not getting hormone therapy! It was just, "show up at the hospital when you're ready to deliver."

She had my sister 11 days before she turned 46. All of which is to say, can the human body do extraordinary things? It does them all the time! This board is proof of that.

4394~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I am 43 years old, will be 44 years old when I deliver. This will be our 7th. I have 6 boys - 15, 12, 12, 11, 6 and 4 years old.

By the way, I was told I probably won't have any children due to endometriosis. I had a laparotomy done in 1988, for removal of 3-4" huge cysts. But that’s another story.

I have an appt tomorrow to see the regular OB [obstetrician] . I am 10 weeks today. Due 11.11.07
