Basal Body Temperature

Wednesday, November 10, 2010
Basal body temperature is your body’s temperature prior to rising from bed and after having rested for a minimum of three hours. This can vary slightly from one woman to another. Increasing levels in the hormone progesterone result in a slight increase in body temperature of approximately 0.2 C degrees Celsius following ovulation. This increase may be smaller of greater and can be seen as either a sudden increase or a more gradual climb over several days. An increase in body temperature does not predict ovulation but rather signals that ovulation has already occurred. Once your body temperature peaks and remains at this higher level for three days you can conclude that ovulation has occurred. This temperature increase continues throughout your cycle until immediately prior to the onset of menstruation when it will dip slightly, however if you are pregnant your temperature will remain elevated.

The Basal Body Temperature method involves measuring your body temperature each morning prior to rising, plotting these temperature readings on a chart and examining the resulting patterns. As you see changes from month to month you will gradually build up an overall picture of your fertility pattern. By including other fertility indicators with your charting this should provide you with an even more detailed understanding of your menstrual cycle and fertility patterns.

Obtaining a thermometer

A digital basal body temperature thermometer or an accurate digital thermometer is recommended as these are easier to read and will 'beep' to let you know when your temperature has been accurately recorded. You should use the same thermometer throughout a cycle.

There are a number of manufacturers that produce thermometers especially suited for charting basal body temperatures. Typically these have a finer range, increased sensitivity measuring up to 1/100th of a degree and specialised memory features. Baby 4 You are stockists of the flexi style, high accuracy, 1/100 degree scale, auto beep OuvTemp basal body thermometer.

Taking your temperature

Prior to going to bed in the evening leave your thermometer within arm's reach of your bedside. As soon as you wake up (and before doing anything else) take your temperature according to the directions given with your particular thermometer.

You can take your temperature orally, vaginally or rectally so long as you take in same place for the duration of your cycle. You should take your temperature as close as possible to the same time each day, as your temperature can vary with time (0.1 C per hour)

Recording your temperature

Record your temperature and date either directly onto your BBT chart or onto a piece of notepaper to add into your chart or charting software latter in the day. BBT thermometers often come with a complementary blank chart that be easily photocopied. Our flexi basal thermometer comes with such a chart or you might like to download our alternative version for free.

Pregnancy Test

Tuesday, September 14, 2010
Strange subject for a child page
No, not at all. Who wants to be pregnant is usually keen to know as early as possible, whether you have worked or not. This leads not infrequently to the corresponding application errors and disappointments. So here is some info on the function and use of pregnancy tests.

How do pregnancy tests?
A pregnancy test detects the hormone hCG, which is produced from an embryo taken root. The hormone is exclusively produced by a pregnancy. It is possible this hormone in blood and urine.

Urine
The urine tests are less sensitive than a test from the blood as achieved, the concentration of pregnancy hormone in urine, the blood levels only after a lag of two days. Therefore, one can
perform a urine test is reasonably well until the day of the absence of rule, that is less than 14 days after ovulation. For only then are the concentrations in the urine is high enough for a reliable test. This is indicated by reputable manufacturers of pregnancy tests out explicitly.

So-called Frühtests or pre-tests are never reliable, and should not be performed if you want to have a reliable result. As the morning urine is more concentrated than the urine during the day (due to fluid intake diluted), for such a test morning urine should be used.

The tests usually consist of a control strip that changes color every time the test is usable (eg not
yet expired) and the actual test strip, which reacts specifically to the hCG. Thus if both color strips, then this means that first the test is working and 2 a pregnancy. The result is a yes / no result. The amount of urine contained hCG can not be determined, however, the test strip of the more intense the higher the concentration of the pregnancy hormone is.

Blood test
In this test directly determines the concentration of hCG in the blood. So I can not specify exact levels of the hormone. Theoretically, the evidence from the blood is already quite possible one week after ovulation or the puncture of the egg cells. But at such an early date the statement is too vague, so the earliest reasonable time after ovulation seems to be for such a provision for 12 days. Usually people wait 14-15 days after ovulation. In a test tube fertilization, the calculation refers to the day of puncture, which corresponds to the ovulation.

Other pregnancy signs
Reliable other signs of early pregnancy are not. Only in the late 5th Week of pregnancy (Pregnancy Calendar) can pregnancy be detected by ultrasound. Until then the pregnancy is detected, therefore only through the blood or urine and, therefore, a so-called biochemical pregnancy.

Error

  • As hCG and ovulation-inducing hormone (LH) biochemically very similar, it can at the time of LHPeak, so come the rise of this hormone to a positive test. Conversely, one with test strips to Ovulationsnachweis hCG detected in the urine, they should not be exploited as pregnancy tests. They are too unreliable.
  • It is often a hormone treatment in the second half of the cycle yet given hCG to trigger ovulation at first, later to support the luteal phase. If the distance is such a hiss and a test injection of short (one week or less), then there is a positive result, even though no pregnancy.

Dilemma of the "hold"
After a fertility treatment one would naturally like to know as early as possible, whether it "worked". Not only after a fertility treatment even among those couples who try naturally (which is often forgotten here in the forum) on hold after ovulation / sex with a lot of patience is to be seen. If, however, so a urine test at a very early stage, then this is either a positive one and ponders whether this is possibly the remains of an hCG injection, or it is negative and it is hoped that it is so due to the early stage .

In a child forum you have very rarely seen women who made a test and then did not start to brood of such. Therefore, there exists the sometimes legitimate view that 'pee tests are stupid. " This is certainly unfair to those tests, as they for the early stage of their deployment so can anything. Here is a table showing the average hCG values (from the blood) in early pregnancy.

HCG table. Normal values in early pregnancy
Time value of normal range

To assess whether the pregnancy is intact, so much the absolute HCG values of significance, but the increase of the hormone. They say most of that was to take place at the beginning of a pregnancy, a doubling of blood every two days.

Pregnancy blood test, what happens when certain

Thursday, July 1, 2010
A simple, quick and inexpensive blood test may soon be all that is required to detect chromosomal abnormalities that lead to conditions like Down’s syndrome.

Dutch researchers are confident that they are on the verge of an accurate procedure that will test the mum’s blood for abnormalities in the foetus. Current methods such as amniocentesis are invasive and run the risk of triggering a miscarriage so this test would be far safer for the baby.

The study is set to continue for two more years and researchers hope to increase its accuracy. “At the moment, the reliability of the test is about 80% due to false negative results, but we are working to improve the accuracy,” said Dr Suzanna Frints who led the study.

The test could be particularly useful for older mums-to-be and those who are at a high risk of an abnormal pregnancy. It could even become a regular part of all ante-natal check ups.

“It is the holy grail of prenatal diagnosis to try and find a reliable method of diagnosing Down’s syndrome and other chromosome abnormalities without doing invasive testing,” Dr Suzanna explained, but added that it was “important to emphasise that it is some years away”.

IntegraMed Conference Identifies 3 Trends That Will Transform Fertility Success Rates

Wednesday, May 5, 2010
3 Trends That Will Transform Fertility Success RatesThe three trends in fertility treatment are:

1. Improved pregnancy rates with decreased multiple rates through metabolomics. With metabolomics, embryo quality can now be evaluated non-invasively to more accurately measure their quality. In doing so, only the most viable embryo needs to be transplanted rather than multiple embryos, thus improving pregnancy rates while significantly reducing the instances of multiples through in vitro fertilization (IVF).

2. Use of vitrification technology to successfully freeze eggs. One of the most exciting and long-awaited advances in fertility preservation is the ability to successfully freeze eggs via a technology called vitrification. Through vitrification, eggs are plunged in liquid nitrogen and instantly frozen, ensuring that this largely water-based cell does not form crystals that would expand and disrupt the egg’s membrane.

Dr. Schnorr predicts that within the next three to four years about 25% of all fertility preservation will utilize vitrification.

3. Improvement in the evaluation and treatment of severe male-factor infertility. Today 40 percent of infertility problems are attributed to the man. Procedures to improve the evaluation, risk assessment and treatment of severe male-factor infertility were discussed

Mom holds key to sons fertility

Thursday, April 22, 2010

Mom holds key to sons fertility A man's fertility depends more on his mother's lifestyle than his own, research suggests.

A large-scale review of factors affecting sperm production found that how a woman looks after herself in pregnancy could have a major effect on her unborn baby's ability to father a child in adulthood.

Smoking and exposure to pesticides and traffic pollution all do more harm in the first weeks of life than in the adult body, according to Richard Sharpe, one of Britain's leading reproductive biologists.

Professor Sharpe also said that while damage done in adulthood can be undone by kicking bad habits, damage inflicted in the womb was probably permanent.

Fertility Center Achieves High Pregnancy Rates While Lowering Pregnancy Risks

Sunday, April 18, 2010
Fertility Center Achieves High Pregnancy Rates While Lowering Pregnancy RisksEvery year thousand of families are created with the assistance of in-vitro fertilization. Many of those newborns are twins. While some may see this as a double blessing, it is important to understand that there are many potential risks associated with multiple gestation. Statistics show that a higher percentage of twins are born prematurely. Premature birth can cause complications resulting in physical impairment, learning disabilities, and even death. In addition to the increased risk to the children born of multiple pregnancy, there is also an increased risk of complications associated with carrying multiples for the pregnant woman.

Pacific Fertility Center has been taking steps to minimize the risk of multiple gestation for several years. "We have worked actively to increase pregnancy rates and decrease the number of multiples," comments Carolyn Givens, M.D. "Balancing high pregnancy rates with low pregnancy risk improves pregnancy outcomes. Thus, achieving this balance and reducing the risk of multiple gestation is our goal."

Week 39: Doctor's Visit

Thursday, February 4, 2010
Today I had another Doctor's visit and my first internal exam! :) Oh, to clarify, I am IN my 39th week, so I have 38 weeks down... I always feel like it's probably confusing how I post. When I started, I was ambitious with each week and now I feel a bit silly about that- hehe.

I did all the normal stuff- urine sample, blood pressure (good), then stripped from the waist down. I had a male doctor today (in the practice there are 2 females and 4 male doctors), but I'm good with all of the guys. I have an overall preference for female doctors- particularly with OBY/GNs- because they usually know better what things feel like, but with this practice I have found EVERYONE to be really fantastic! Great bedside manners, very gentle, pretty go-with-the-flow people :) And the guy who I met with today is from California (yay! hehe) and he also is very active with the blood cord donation council at Fairfax Hospital- which I think is pretty cool.

Anyways, because it was a male doctor, the female nurse stayed in during the internal exam (as did my husband). To start with, we listed to the heart (good), he measured my uterus and then felt around to guess about how big he thinks Baby H is. His guess what that she is around 7-7.5 pounds NOW and so maybe 8 pounds by next week/delivery. I actually was not scared by this- I think I'm so big I was almost hoping she WOULDN'T be 6 pounds because that basically would be I'm that much heavier- lol. Just kidding :) But, I am rather pleased by her weight as it doesn't seem TOO big and certainly not small. We'll see how she is when she is born.

So, he then started the intern, which was really just him feeling around with his fingers. I didn't find it that uncomfortable and he said 'ok, a bunch of pressure,' but I really didn't feel too much. Of course, I usually don't have problems with my yearly exams, so maybe that makes a difference. Anyways, he felt in and... I'm starting to thin and I'm not dilated at all!

I'm actually not as disappointed by this as I thought I'd be. I think if it was that way last week, when I was getting so many harder contractions and back pain and all that stuff, I would have been disappointed, but I haven't been feeling that way this week. So, I haven't been feeling like I would have anything 'going on' down there. I think it's weird that I felt so much stuff pretty much for the few weeks BEFORE this week, but ah well. :) (don't get me wrong, I'm sore and tired and all that, but the back aches and really hard pre-contractions or whatever kinda' slowed down)

So, I'm still just waiting! My mom is planning to fly out Feb 12 which should still work fine. If nothing is going on by my due date of Feb 16, they are going to wait until the week of Feb 22 or even Mar 1-3 to induce me. So, no matter what- I will have a baby soon! :)
Side note- as you can sort of see in my photo... I now have stretch marks on my belly :( I went until about week 36 I think with a clear belly (ok, 1-2 marks after week 28) and then it just exploded! So, I now have stretch marks on my tights/butt (those I got early on), my breasts (not too bad, whew!) and my belly (grrr). And this week my belly button went from really shallow to..... ok- I don't think it's an 'outie,' but it's not an innie. It's just kinda' not there anymore... lol

First Response Gives Women Pregnancy Results Sooner Than Ever Before

Friday, January 29, 2010
First Response Gives Women Pregnancy Results Sooner Than Ever BeforeFIRST RESPONSE Early Results Pregnancy Test now has patent pending technology that can detect the pregnancy hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), up to six days before the day of a woman’s missed period with unsurpassed accuracy -- one day before any other at-home pregnancy test available on the market.

“A pregnancy test with results this early sets the stage for a healthy baby and a healthy mother. This latest advancement means pregnant women can initiate a healthier lifestyle even sooner in the critical first stages of a baby’s development,” said Mary Jane Minkin*, MD, board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist in private practice in New Haven, Connecticut, and a Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yale University School of Medicine. “Women who want results quickly will undoubtedly have less anxiety when taking this at-home test.”

FIRST RESPONSE pregnancy kits work by detecting the presence of the pregnancy hormone (hCG) in a woman’s urine. HCG begins to appear in a pregnant woman 8-10 days after fertilization. The amount of hCG doubles every 36-48 hours as the pregnancy progresses. And now with patent pending Polymeric Amplification Technology (PAT) that only FIRST RESPONSE has, FIRST RESPONSE can detect the pregnancy hormone at lower levels than ever before.

50 Foods Every Pregnant Woman Should Eat

Monday, January 25, 2010
Stock photo by bjearwicke
50 Foods Every Pregnant Woman Should EatMost people are already very familiar with the foods that pregnant women must avoid – alcohol, excess caffeine, raw seafood, and the like – but few take pause to think about what they should consume. Experts generally recommend that pregnant women stick with the portions recommended by the USDA’s Food Pyramid guidelines, with specific boosts to certain nutrients such as iron, folic acid, fiber, Vitamin C, protein, calcium, Vitamin A, magnesium, and a few others.

These extremely valuable substances help both mother and child healthy and safe by promoting blood flow, building tissues in the brain and other organs, fortifying the immune system, strengthening bones and teeth, allowing for better vitamin absorption, and numerous other benefits. The following foods ought to find their way into a pregnancy diet, even if some of them must be ingested in moderation or within certain parameters.

Week 34: Complaints ;)

Monday, January 4, 2010
So, if you are following me on Twitter, you have noticed my complaints. ;) I actually kinda' use twitter to keep track of what I am feeling so that I can write about it later here. Here are some things I have been writing on Twitter:

"So, mostly @ night & first thing in morning,I have pelvic pressure and now this: Stinging in my vag**a area- not constant; just quick stings"

"Ugh, awake w/heartburn. Apparently I'm meant to get a max of 4 hrs of sleep at a time for the rest of this pregnancy! "

"I keep wanting to walk around and then it's SO uncomfortable :( And it makes me feel super fat ... All sorts of unhappiness tonight "

"I feel like I'm in the first trimester again with all this dairy I want! "

So, my new and ongoing things are: 1. Not able to sleep as much, and 2. Heartburn.

1. I can't seem to sleep more than 4 hours at a time. I actually have a SUPER hard time falling asleep at night and then wake up early. Which always annoys me and before I was able to get back to sleep right away, but now I'm up for between 1/2 hour and hour (and usually do go pee). The good news is that I don't feel tired after that, which I normal would be.

With all this lack of sleep, I DO REALLY hope that when I go into labor it is either morning-afternoon. If it's at night, I would probably be tired and sore from the day and therefore MUCH more aware of any labor pains. If it's earlier, I would probably be happier and able to handle pain better. At least, that's my theory... ;)

2. Heartburn. Ok - this is new for me. I don't really get heartburn and I don't really get acid reflux (are they the same?). For the last week or so, I find that I get the burning sensation, kinda' like my food is going back up. The annoying this is that it always tastes the same! lol - before if I had any sort of regurgitation, it would taste a bit like what I ate. This is all the same! At first, it seemed to be worst laying down; now I think it's worst if I'm sitting up a bit. Overall, it's not so bad.

Other Updates

My mom came from CA for the week between X-mas and New Years, which was very nice. She certainly is more active than my husband and I on a normal day and so I walked around a TON more than normal. :) But, we also cleaned house really well and got the baby room painted and all set up! Yay! It's very cute. The baby clothes for months 0-6 was also washed and put away. I'm all set for Baby H to come out now!

This past weekend I packed the baby bag for the hospital. I need to still pack my bag. Any 'must haves' that you recommend?

Body Updates

Looking back at my photos, I feel like I was now so skinny then and so big now! Ok, not skinny, but my belly is so much bigger now! And still growing! I'm a bit sad, I finally started to get some stretch marks on the underside of my belly. Not too bad, but I was happy that I didn't get them until week 33.

My breasts have been leaking, which is interesting. Usually the right breast gives me a small dot of wetness on my nightshirt. The left one not so much, although the other night I had a wet spot that was about the size of a half dollar! hehe

Baby kicks: She is very active now - today she has been jumping all around! It is certainly mostly movements; she never really seemed to be into the kicks as much as just moving and jumping around. I sleep mostly on my left side and she will slide over there at night and then move back to the right during the day. Right now, she's just stretching all around.

Location: I'm not sure if she has 'dropped' or not - she has been rather low the entire time! I think at times she does, but then she seems to move back up. I have noticed in the last few days that there is more pressure on my pelvic area and I have to pee more often, but also that I get these brief stinging sensations. I don't sting when I pee, just these quick little stings at times. The pressure and stings seems to be mostly in the morning and at night, and these are when Baby H seems to be the lowest. I'll have to ask the doctor about this.

I see the doctor this Wednesday - yay!!! They don't do much when I go in besides listen to the heartbeat and measure me; I kinda' want them to check to see how things are 'down there' - ie, is anything changing or still all closed up? We are anxious to meet Baby H!!! Less than 6 weeks to go!
