IntegraMed Conference Identifies 3 Trends That Will Transform Fertility Success Rates

The three trends in fertility treatment are:

1. Improved pregnancy rates with decreased multiple rates through metabolomics. With metabolomics, embryo quality can now be evaluated non-invasively to more accurately measure their quality. In doing so, only the most viable embryo needs to be transplanted rather than multiple embryos, thus improving pregnancy rates while significantly reducing the instances of multiples through in vitro fertilization (IVF).

2. Use of vitrification technology to successfully freeze eggs. One of the most exciting and long-awaited advances in fertility preservation is the ability to successfully freeze eggs via a technology called vitrification. Through vitrification, eggs are plunged in liquid nitrogen and instantly frozen, ensuring that this largely water-based cell does not form crystals that would expand and disrupt the egg’s membrane.

Dr. Schnorr predicts that within the next three to four years about 25% of all fertility preservation will utilize vitrification.

3. Improvement in the evaluation and treatment of severe male-factor infertility. Today 40 percent of infertility problems are attributed to the man. Procedures to improve the evaluation, risk assessment and treatment of severe male-factor infertility were discussed

Irregular Period? It Could Be More Than Just Stress

When a young woman's menstrual periods get out of whack — extra-long, extra-short or intermittent — she may just chalk it up to stress and ignore it. To even out monthly cycles, doctors often prescribe birth control pills, without doing much of an evaluation first. But both those approaches are a mistake, says gynecologist Lawrence Nelson, of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Nelson studies primary ovarian insufficiency, a disruption in reproductive hormones that affects 1 in 100 women by age 40. His research has shown that POI greatly reduces fertility, impairs bone health and often goes undiagnosed for years.

We spend a lot of time at work, and it may impact our health more than we realize, including our fertility. Let's talk about some factors that may be important and what you can do about them.

One factor is stress. I'm sure you already knew that, but it's probably the most important one we can talk about. I know from experience that a very stressful component at work is your manager. Managing up is a skill, and I've learned a lot about doing it well, but then there are managers who just radiate stress. If you can find another job, sometimes that's the best idea.

Fertility And Female Sexual Satisfaction Linked

A study done at the Stanford University Medical Center based in California has suggested that there is a link between female sexual dysfunction and infertility. The study which was done on over 200 women saw that those with fertility problems had a significantly higher risk of sexual dysfunction.

Interestingly the results showed that those women who suffered from infertility specifically reported issues with sexual desire and arousal, but they did not appear to suffer from other female sexual dysfunction symptoms such as pain during sex, vaginal dryness or problems attaining orgasm.

Millions of people have been contaminated with potentially dangerous gender-bending chemicals from food packaging, drinks cans and baby bottles, a study shows.

Researchers say the general public is 'ubiquitously' exposed to bisphenol A (BPA) - a man-made chemical linked to breast cancer, fertility problems and birth defects.

The chemical, which mimics the female sex hormone oestrogen, was found at detectable levels in most pregnant women, teenagers and children.

No evidence that complementary therapies help fertility

Couples who are trying to have a baby are probably wasting their time if they are using therapies such as acupuncture to get pregnant, according to new guidelines.

The British Fertility Society has released information stating that there is “no evidence” that using herbal medicine or acupuncture can improve the success of assisted conception.

Institute recruiting couples for study of natural family planning

MILWAUKEE (CNS) -- Researchers at Marquette University's Institute for Natural Family Planning are recruiting couples interested in preventing pregnancy naturally for a study involving two Web-based methods of natural family planning.

The study, which is funded by a $595,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will compare two methods of natural family planning.

The "high-tech" Marquette Model of natural family planning uses the ClearBlue Easy fertility monitor to estimate the beginning and end of the time of fertility in a woman's menstrual cycle, while the "low-tech" method monitors cervical mucus as the sole biological indicator of fertility.

New test to calculate women's fertility

A NEW test allowing women to calculate how quickly their biological clock is ticking will be available in Australia from next month.

A NEW test allowing women to calculate how quickly their biological clock is ticking will be available in Australia from next month.

The $65 blood test will calculate how many eggs a woman has left, News Limited reports.

It will allow them to determine their level of fertility and whether they have time to try for natural conception.

The test will be offered by IVF Australia.

Letting go and relaxing increases chance of IVF success

Women undergoing IVF would be better “letting go” and relaxing than believing that exercise or prayer can increase their chances of having a child, according a new study.

Would-be mothers who coped with the stress of fertility treatment by accepting that there was little they could do to change the outcome were more likely to get pregnant, psychologists found.

Those able to ‘go with the flow’ were almost twice as likely to conceive, researchers found, after they adjusted for the patients' age, cause of infertility and the number of cycles.

Things in Your House May Reduce Fertility

You may not realize it, but there could be something in your home that lessens your ability to have kids. That's according to a new UC Berkeley study released in Environmental Health Perspectives.

The study finds that women who are exposed to higher levels of a chemical found in some flame retardants are less likely to conceive. That chemical can most commonly be found in some furniture and fabrics. As they break down, you can find it in dust as well. It can even be found in some nail polish removers.

Forget perfume: natural odour is best for seducing men

For the first time, researchers have found men's testosterone levels actually increase in response to a woman's natural smell when she is at her most fertile.

Previously women have been shown to be attracted to men's body odour containing the natural pheromones or chemical signals that attract the opposite sex.

But now it seems the attraction is mutual, with evidence that women's own body odour exudes signals that she is in a fertile stage of her natural cycle.
