Irregular Period? It Could Be More Than Just Stress

Monday, May 3, 2010
Irregular Period - It Could Be More Than Just StressWhen a young woman's menstrual periods get out of whack — extra-long, extra-short or intermittent — she may just chalk it up to stress and ignore it. To even out monthly cycles, doctors often prescribe birth control pills, without doing much of an evaluation first. But both those approaches are a mistake, says gynecologist Lawrence Nelson, of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Nelson studies primary ovarian insufficiency, a disruption in reproductive hormones that affects 1 in 100 women by age 40. His research has shown that POI greatly reduces fertility, impairs bone health and often goes undiagnosed for years.

Researchers discover a gene that regulates, blocks ovulation

Monday, July 21, 2008
Montreal, July 17, 2008 – A group of Canadian and European researchers have unlocked the mystery of a gene with the potential to both regulate and block ovulation. The new study – a collaboration between the Université de Montréal in Canada and the Institut de génetique et biologie moléculaire et cellulaire of the Université de Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France – is published in the latest issue of the journal Genes & Development.

"Our findings demonstrate that the Lrh1 gene is essential in regulating ovulation," said Bruce D. Murphy, director the Animal Research Centre at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and an adjunct professor of and obstetrics and gynaecology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Université de Montréal. "Until this point, the role of Lrh1 in female fertility was unclear, but we have found the gene regulates multiple mechanisms of ovulation and may affect fertilization."

To reach their conclusions, the research team developed a new type of genetically modified mouse whose Lrh1 gene was selectively blocked in the ovary. They found that deletion of the Lrh1 gene effectively stopped ovulation. "This discovery means we can envision new contraceptives that selectively stop ovulation," said Dr. Murphy. "If created, these new contraceptives would be more effective and produce less side-effects than current steroid-based forms of birth control."

What's more, the findings could lead to the development of pharmaceuticals that activate the Lrh1 gene, which may prove critical in giving infertile couples hope in producing children. "This is an important development, since 15 percent of couples are infertile," said Dr. Murphy. "The widespread role of this gene in the ovary indicates that it may be targeted to stimulate ovulation and, eventually, conception."

Three pregnancies despite elevated serum FSH & advanced age

Thursday, July 10, 2008
ABSTRACT: Although the transfer of fertilized donor oocytes is the most efficacious mode of conception for infertile women with hypergonadotrophism associated with incipient or apparent ovarian failure, there are many individuals who, for religious, ethical, or personal reasons, would prefer to try to conceive with their own oocytes.

The three cases presented here represent extremes to date for (i) highest serum FSH concentration in a woman with incipient ovarian failure (n = 2), and (ii) the oldest woman with apparent overt ovarian failure (n = 1) to have successful pregnancies. All three cases were treated for only a short time with pharmacological dosages of ethinyl oestradiol with luteal phase support with progesterone.

The peak FSH (mIU/ml) in cases 1 and 2 was 143 and 127 respectively. The precedents set in these cases can help physician–patient consultation when patients enquire whether there is a certain critical FSH concentration above which pregnancy is not possible or an age over which successful pregnancy could not be achieved even if ovulation despite ovarian failure was possible.

First case: A 36 year old gravida 1, para 1 presented with a 3 year history of infertility. Her estradiol was less than 20 pg/ml, her FSH was 143 mIU/ml. Conceived 2nd cycle, delivered vaginally at full term.

Second case: A 35 year old woman presented with primary infertility and oligomenorrhoea. FSH of 22 mIU/ml, estradiol was less than 20 pg/ml. She had a successful full-term delivery.

Third case: a 45y old woman, last menstrual period was 6 months previously, FSH of 35. She delivered a full-term healthy baby

Shutdown/Cleansing program for fertility (infertility)

Wednesday, January 2, 2008
The following is a breakdown and explanation of what we would call a - 3 month cleansing / ovulation shutdown / restoration and weight loss program.

According to Dr. John R. Lee, MD it is sometimes necessary to shut "off" the ovaries for a few months to allow the body to heal. PCOS, PCOD, short luteal phases, ovarian cysts and other similar fertility issues will impede the bodies ability to conceive.

Add to this the need for cleansing the liver and colon, according to traditional Chinese medicine and herbal medicine wisdom through the years, and you have a powerful plan to achieve fertility naturally AND safely.

We have put this together over 8 years through the study of alternative medicine and traditional folk uses of herbs and for restoration and building of the body. In this case of course we focus on finding information to support these actions in the reproductive "department." It is our wish to help you conceive, as many others have, naturally.

The purpose of this program is:

A: To cleanse the major organs of the body which in some way will affect the reproductive system and often allow the body to produce life again. This does not mean that it takes only 3 months but it is a good amount of time to make changes. We will target liver cleansing and colon cleansing for this and provide tips for healthier eating to support this effort.

B: To restore cyst covered ovaries by shutting off FSH and LH surges for these 3 months. This focuses on PCOS, PCOD and the potential for cysts due to an imbalance of estrogen and progesterone or testosterone and estrogen. The hope is to restore the ovaries, for cysts to atrophy and for proper ovulation to resume without ovarian cysts preventing it. (see disclaimer.)

Since elevated prolactin, testosterone and estrogen levels affect FSH and LH balance AND cysts, this is important for over all hormonal health NOT just for the cysts. Many say " I don't have cysts." This may be true but shutting down is a natural way to prevent conception during this time while building the body into a healthy home for your baby to come. This is not recommended as a method of birth control in the BCP [birth control pill] sense. It is also NOT natural family planning.

C: Lastly to lose weight or change eating habits and to give the body proper nutrition which again can make for a better ovulation and a healthier baby. We believe that the true love of a mother and father is to love their baby before conception even occurs; enough to give the baby a healthier start in life. The healthier the start, the better the health after birth.
