Time to update our Over 40 Birth Statistics Quote

Thursday, April 8, 2010
It's time to update this quote:

"In 2007, there were more than 105,000 births in the United States to women ages 40 through 44, and over 7,349 to women 45 to 54. In 2007, there were 2,274 live births to women over 42, using donor eggs."

Checking the 2008 birth stats today at the CDC and I found:
All races and origins
40–44 years................. 106,090 live births
45–54 years................ 7,666 live births

TOTAL (40-54) : 113,756 live births

Next I went to SART, who has the 2008 IVF and Donor Egg rates in the US:

Fresh Embryos From Non-Donor Oocytes
Number of cycles : (40-42) 9,243 (over 42) 6,152
Percentage of cycles resulting in live births : (40-42) 12.3 (over 42) 4.1
Total live births : (40-42) 1,136.89 (over 42) 252.23

TOTAL (over 40) : 1,389

Thawed Embryos From Non-Donor Oocytes
Number of transfers : (40-42) 1,194 (over 42) 920
Percentage of transfers resulting in live births : (40-42) 19.2 (over 42) 13.2
Total live births : (40-42) 229.25 (over 42) 121.44

TOTAL (over 40) : 351

Total number of women conceiving from IVF (non-DE) (over 40) : 1,740

Donor Oocytes (all ages)
Number of transfers : (Fresh Embryos) 9,905 (Thawed Embryos) 5,319
Percentage of transfers resulting in live births : (Fresh) 55.0 (Thawed) 32.7
Total Live Births : (Fresh) 5,447.75 (Thawed) 1,739.31

TOTAL births by Donor Egg (all ages) : 7,187

How old were the women who used ART in the United States in 2006?
Figure 3: The average age of women using ART services in 2006 was 36. The largest group of women using ART services were women younger than 35, representing 39% of all ART cycles carried out in 2006. Twenty-three percent of ART cycles were carried out among women aged 35–37, 19% among women aged 38–40, 10% among women aged 41–42, and 10% among women older than 42.

Number of live-birth deliveries to women using ART older than 42 in 2006: 4,134

How did the types of ART cycles used in the United States differ among women of different ages?
Figure 4 shows that, in 2006, the type of ART cycles varied by the woman’s age. The vast majority (96%) of women younger than 35 used their own eggs, whereas only 4% used donor eggs. In contrast, 21% of women aged 41 to 42 and more than half (55%) of women older than 42 used donor eggs. Across all age groups, more ART cycles using fresh eggs or embryos were performed than cycles using frozen embryos.

Number of live-birth deliveries to women using Donor Egg older than 42 in 2006: 2,274

Link to previous update.

So the updated quote becomes:
"In 2008, there were more than 106,000 live births in the United States to women ages 40 through 44, and 7,666 live births to women 45 to 54. In 2006, there were 2,274 live births to women over 42, using donor eggs."

Fertility alarm invented for biological clock

Saturday, February 27, 2010
TIME PRESSURES - Vanessa Thompson conceived her twins Jak and Zeb through IVF after struggling to fall pregnant in her late thirtiesA NEW test that can measure a woman's egg reserve is set to revolutionize the way women think about their future.

The test, dubbed the "egg timer", will allow women for the first time to know how fast their biological clock is ticking.

"I think this is a big step forward," medical director of IVF Australia, Assistant Professor Peter Illingworth, told The Sunday Mail.

Women Over 35 Told to Keep Contraception Despite Infertility Messages

Wednesday, February 17, 2010
Women Over 35 Told to Keep Contraception Despite Infertility MessagesLaunching its new campaign, Conceivable?, the FPA warned that age alone is not a barrier to birth.

"It's important that women realize it's entirely conceivable that just one night of unprotected sex in your late 30s, 40s, even 50s can end in an unplanned pregnancy."

Data for England and Wales shows abortion rates among women aged 40 to 44 are the same as for under-16s - four per each 1,000 women.

Other figures from the Office for National Statistics reveal women between 30 and 34 continue to have the highest fertility rate, at 113.1 per 1,000 women.

But the rate among women aged 40 and over has more than doubled since 1988, from 5.1 to 12.6 per 1,000 women, with more than 26,000 live births to women in this age group in 2008.

Anti-Mullerian Hormone test

Sunday, November 15, 2009

AMH assessment is also useful in fertility assessment as it provides a guide to ovarian reserve and identifies women that may need to consider either egg freezing or trying for a pregnancy sooner rather than later if their long-term future fertility is poor.

Measuring AMH alone may be misleading as high levels occur in conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome and therefore AMH levels should be considered in conjunction with a transvaginal scan of the ovaries to assess antral follicle count.

In view of it's potential use to assess a woman's ovarian reserve and future fertility, measurement of AMH is sometimes called the biological Body Clock Test. see www.ukbodyclock.com

It also has the potential to rationalize the program of ovulation induction and decisions about the number of embryos to transfer in assisted reproduction techniques to maximize pregnancy success rates whilst minimizing the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS)

Alcohol linked to male and female fertility outcomes

Friday, October 16, 2009
Alcohol linked to male and female fertility outcomesGiving up alcohol can help boost a couple's chances of conceiving, according to natural fertility experts.

Homeopaths Nicola Berman and Cassie Everett believe that avoiding drinking for three months can help improve the likelihood of pregnancy by creating the best possible conditions for healthy eggs and sperm.

"If you're trying to conceive, it's tempting to have a glass or two of your favourite tipple to relax and de-stress," they said.

"But research in the British Medical Journal shows that for women, alcohol can disrupt the hormonal balance during the menstrual cycle and reduce the chances of getting pregnant by half."

In addition, evidence suggests that alcohol consumption can also reduce a man's sperm count and mobility.

According to the Daily Express, TV and radio presenter Zoe Ball managed to conceive her second child after five years by giving up alcohol with her husband.

More births for over-40sThe number of women having babies in their 40s has more than doubled in the past 20 years, figures yesterday showed.

There were 12.6 births per 1,000 women in the age group last year against 5.1 in 1988, the Office for National Statistics found.

Those aged 30-34 continue to have the highest fertility overall with 112.3 births per 1,000.

The average age of new mums was unchanged last year at 29.3, despite previous rises every year since the mid-1970s.

Older moms spur mini baby boom

Friday, September 25, 2009

Older moms spur mini baby boomOTTAWA — Older moms delivered a slight baby boom in 2007, a statistical jump that will continue to fray the national patchwork of child-care services, advocates warn.

Statistics Canada reported Tuesday that 367,864 babies were born that year - 13,247 or 3.7 per cent more than in 2006.

The number of births rose in all age groups, particularly among mothers aged 30 to 34, and in every province and territory except Prince Edward Island and Yukon.

The number of babies born in 2007 was the highest since 1995 and the fifth straight annual increase. More than half the jump in births, 56 per cent, was traced to women aged 30 or older.

Turning Back the Reproductive Clock

Tuesday, September 1, 2009
Stock photo by IngerM
Turning Back the Reproductive ClockScientific dogma has long asserted that females are born with their entire lifetime supply of eggs, and once they're gone, they're gone. New findings suggest that in nematode worms, at least, this is not necessarily so.

Molecular physiologist Marc Van Gilst, Ph.D., and colleagues at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle report that during starvation, sexually mature adult worms stop ovulating and the germline component of their reproductive system – the sex cells, including mature and maturing eggs – dies off and leaves behind nothing but a few stem cells.

However, once normal food conditions resume, the conserved stem cells can produce a brand new crop of sex cells, complete with youthful fertile eggs. This turning back of the reproductive clock took place in tiny C. elegans soil worms that were up to15 times older than worms in their reproductive prime that were fed normally.

Older Women may soon be able to conceive

Friday, August 7, 2009
Older Women may soon be able to conceiveScientists have said that women might now be able to conceive at an age past child-bearing, all thanks to a new treatment that is expected to come up in the next ten years. Scientists have discovered a protein that they believe can be developed into a pill or even an injection to extend the life of the eggs in the ovary.

This could lead to a fertility revolution, as women would be able to wait longer to have a child.

Scientists seem to have unlocked the key to human fertility

Thursday, August 6, 2009
Scientists seem to have unlocked the key to human fertilityScientists at Leeds and Bradford have found a unique ‘DNA signature’ in human sperm, which may perhaps operate as a key that unlocks an egg’s fertility thereby stimulating new life.

Drs David Miller and David Iles from the University of Leeds, in partnership with Dr Martin Brinkworth at the University of Bradford, have discovered that sperm marks a DNA signature which could only be recognized by an egg from the same species. Apparently, this permits fertilization. Also, it may even elucidate how a species grows its own exclusive genetic identity.

Stem cell discovery raises hopes of restoring female fertility

Sunday, July 26, 2009
Stem cell discovery raises hopes of restoring female fertilityThe theory that women are born with all the eggs they will ever have has been challenged by research that could raise the prospect of restoring female fertility and reversing the menopause.

Scientists in China have discovered that the ovaries of adult and newborn mice seem to contain stem cells that can be grown into eggs that can be fertilised to create healthy offspring.

The findings suggest that it may be possible one day to isolate and culture these stem cells from women’s ovaries, should they also exist in humans. This could provide a source of eggs to extend female fertility, which declines as the ovaries’ supply is depleted with age.

Novel genetic test improves pregnancy rates in older women

Sunday, July 5, 2009
Scientists from University of Oxford, UK claim to have developed a new less invasive genetic test that has found to greatly improve pregnancy rates in older women with failed attempts.

The new test, developed by Dr. Elpida Fragouli, examining chromosomes in human eggs a few hours after fertilisation can identify those that are capable of forming a healthy baby.

She said that her team's work had already enabled seven ongoing pregnancies in a group of older women with a history of multiple failed IVF attempts.

What most women don't know about fertility

Tuesday, June 23, 2009
What most women dont know about fertility Have you ever found yourself talking to a friend about your fertility struggle, when a blank, horrified look begins to crawl across her face? She's probably blissfully ignorant about all a person can go through to conceive.

Except for those of us who've been forced to learn firsthand about things like stimming, egg retrieval, male factor infertility, and reproductive endocrinology, these terms may as well be Greek to most people.

For a "fertile", the concept of getting pregnant is usually something to the effect of get frisky; sperm meets egg; buy home pregnancy test; have baby.

Older mums boom: Over 26,000 babies were born to women over 40 last yearUK - The number of babies born to mothers over the age of 40 has more than doubled since 1997, new figures showed today.

More than 26,000 older women gave birth last year, up from under 13,000 in the year Labour came to power.

Numbers of older mothers have shot up in recent years as greater numbers of well-educated women have chosen to spend their 20s and 30s pursuing careers rather than building families.

How Dr Snell helps women conceive

Saturday, June 6, 2009
Dr Kenneth Snell holds a baby conceived with the help of his acupuncture and herbal fertility treatmentA doctor who claims to achieve a remarkable 87 per cent success rate helping women in Australia to become pregnant has explained how he does it with herbal medicine and acupuncture.

Dr Kenneth Snell, of the Acupuncture IVF and Fertility Clinic in Sydney, says he administers special Chinese medicine and acupuncture to facilitate in vitro fertilization (IVF).

He says his special treatment program has helped achieve an 87 per cent success rate for pregnancies.

His rate of 87 per cent compares favourably with typical rates of less than 40 per cent for most IVF programs.

Dr Snell says, "I have proven with studies which I have conducted with the cooperation of patients at my clinic over recent years, that my treatment program facilitates a much higher success rate for in vitro fertilisation."

Dr Snell has also achieved high success rates with women over forty, including women who have failed IVF before or have been told that they will not conceive due to their eggs being too old.

Women head abroad for fertility treatment

Wednesday, May 27, 2009
Women head abroad for fertility treatmentThousands of women every year are leaving the UK to have fertility treatment abroad.

Women are walking away from NHS waiting lists, a shortage of eggs and sperm, and the relatively high costs of private treatment in the UK, according to a report in the Guardian.

According to a study last year by the charity Infertility Network UK, 76 per cent of those seeking fertility treatment would consider going abroad.

Late motherhood boosts family lifespan

Tuesday, May 5, 2009
University of Utah demographer Ken R. Smith led a new study confirming that women who have their last baby after age 45 live longer than women who have their last...Same genes linked to longevity and births after age 45

SALT LAKE CITY, May 4, 2009 – Women who have babies naturally in their 40s or 50s tend to live longer than other women. Now, a new study shows their brothers also live longer, but the brothers' wives do not, suggesting the same genes prolong lifespan and female fertility, and may be more important than social and environmental factors.

"If women in your family give birth at older ages, you may well have a chance of living longer than you would otherwise," says the study's lead author, demographer Ken R. Smith, a professor of family and consumer studies at the University of Utah. "If you have a female relative who had children after age 45, then there may be some genetic benefit in your family that will enhance your longevity."

For descendants of the Utah and Quebec pioneers studied, "you may be able to look at the ages when your female ancestors gave birth – rather than just their longevity – in estimating how long you may live," says Smith, whose study will be published online May 4 and in the June 10 print issue of the Journal of Gerontology: Biological Sciences.

The researchers examined high-quality genealogical records from the Utah Population Database at the University of Utah with its records of 1.6 million Utah Mormon pioneers and their descendants. They also used the University of Montreal's Program on Demographic History Research, which has records on 400,000 people who lived in heavily Catholic Quebec between 1608 and 1850.

Specifically, the study involved the records of 11,604 Utah men who were born between 1800 and 1869 and who had at least one sister who lived at least to age 50; and the records of 6,206 Quebec men who lived between 1670 and 1750, and had at least one sister who lived to 50 or older.

Recalibrating the Biological Clock?

Friday, April 17, 2009
Miraculous birth. A Chinese group isolated stem cells from mouse ovaries, transplanted them into sterilized mice, and got these normal babies.A new study challenges the long-held belief that female mammals start life with a limited number of eggs and cannot produce new ones after birth. For the first time, a Chinese group has found mouse cells that produce new eggs when transplanted into sterilized mice and give rise to normal offspring. The findings are already inflaming the debate over when and how female mammals generate eggs; if confirmed, they could offer hope of new options to treat human infertility.
