Tips for baby proofing your home

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

As a new mother you would do anything to protect your baby who is still not able to crawl, from dangers around your home. But what about when your baby begins to crawl! Would you be able to keep up to his pace of curiosity? No, and moreover now nothing that once looked perfect seems safe for baby anymore. Considering the risk and that baby relies on you for his safely, now it is time to baby proof your home to avoid baby head bumps, injuries from objects lying around and other target injures. Of course, you will need to invest in a little time and you can accomplish the task at the cost of nothing.

The first step would be to ask someone to crawl around your house and watch for any dangers from a baby eye-view. Remember your baby and his curiosity would be growing, so look out for the objects and areas that could cause him harm. Here is a few steps to follow:

1.Baby's nursery
Babies should always be put to sleep on their backs. Avoid keeping soft blankets, toys or any other objects in his crib as these pose a suffocation hazard and other injuries to babies. Check that the crib railings are 2-3/8 inches apart so baby's head wont trap in between. The mattress should be securely fitted in the crib and the railing should be high enough so baby wont crawl out. Position the crib away from windows to avoid strangulation from curtains. Keep all other baby essentials away from reach.

4.Stairs
Lead your child up the stairs and always keep it clutter free. Use Gates on top of stairs to avoid baby's from falling off. Install secure latches on the gates. and ensure the slats are not too wide as baby can trap himself. Avoid placing flower pots on the stairs which can topple over.

3.Living Room
Always keep the floors slippery free or install a carpet for better safety measures. Move book shelves into the storeroom or anchor them to the wall. Check for tiny objects on the floor which baby can get hold of and pop into her mouth. Plug up or tape all electrical sockets in all rooms. Check for broken window panes. Secure all electrical gadgets so that it doesn't topple over baby. Install bumper cushions to the edge of sharp furniture to prevent baby from injuries.

2.Kitchen
Put cleaners high up away in cabinets or use childproof locks on the lower cabinets doors. Use door stops on drawers and store sharp knives/glassware and other kitchen utensils away in the higher drawers. Keep handles of pots and pans with food cooking facing the back of the stove, for babies attempting to stand, will try to reach out and pull them. Never prepare baby food with hot boiling water or pass it over a baby. Check your child's high chair is well equipped with restrained straps. Make sure the child is strapped on his waist and between his legs securely. Keep baking soda and a fire extinguisher in case of fire.

5.Bathroom
Medicines, cosmetics and other essentials should be stored away in cabinets out of baby's reach. Don't set the heater for more than 120 degrees F, and check the temp before pouring on baby's body during his bath. Utilize a no-slip or rubber mat for baby in the tub and never leave him unattended. Install lids on toilets seats and when not in use, keep it closed

Babies base will help you be a better parent

Wednesday, January 13, 2010
Being an internet addict i am always on the look out for new articles and sites for information to satisfy my curiosity on how things work, but most important, i search for information that would be useful for me and my kids. How to raise them the best i can, etc..

All other parents should take a look at babiesbase which is a baby site and provides plenty of information on topics like pregnancy, and elder kids as well. I think i should also register on the site so that as a member i can discuss my parenting problems and lend my advice to other mothers on the forums itself.

I know of many curious first time moms who don't know what and how to do a certain something for their babies. They try searching the internet for help. There are some dads too, who are left alone in the house to care for their kids while their wives are away at work. These parents would be pleased to gather so much information from one site alone.

Can i add salt to my baby's food?

Saturday, November 7, 2009

Can i add salt to my baby's food, if not, when can i begin and what quantity?

You mustn't add salt to your baby's food throughout her first year, but babies normally need an intake of less than 1.g of salt during her first six months, which will be met by breast or formula milk. While babies more than 6 months to 12 months need just about 1.g per day, toddlers till three years old kids need about 2.g per day.

Excess consumption of salt could result in baby's damaged kidneys. Also, lead to high blood pressure in the later stages of life, specially in those families with hypertension history.

Follow these recommendations and tips, and all will be fine:

Limit the intake of salty foods in your baby's diet, or avoid adding salt at all to foods while cooking.

As babies are sensitive to taste so endure your baby has 'salt free' foods which don't necessary have to be 'flavor free'. Some steps to make babies enjoy enriching and flavored foods(salt free)

1. Herbs, aromatic spices or garlic- adds flavor and have their own benefits!

2. A little black pepper- good for indigestion

Babies foods like cereals and jar foods already come with low salt content from during the processing itself and should not be confused with foods aimed for older children. In other words, feed foods labeled as appropriate to babies and kids of their own age group.

Read food labels in order to understand how much salt content is present in foods meant for babies and feed them only those that contain salts no more than 0.1g of sodium per 100g. Remember: 1g of sodium is equivalent to 2.55g of salt.

Fruits, vegetables, salads, plain meat, poultry and fish, eggs, pulses and milk are some foods which contain low salt naturally. Don't add salt to rice and pastas while cooking!

My deep concern for my baby's illness this month

Thursday, September 3, 2009

I've just returned to blogging and writing days after Alisha, my little Almost 3 years old was down with fever, cough and other ailments like vomiting, diarrhea at different times during the month of August. Being a mother it was my responsibility to care for the little one as my first priority even though i know my passion for blogging is beyond realms. I haven't even updated my other main personal blog much the whole of last month but it can understood that i was a more concerned mom of a little sick girl as the monsoons caused us additional worries. Alisha, was too weak by a diarrhea and dehydration which started off as a fever and cold. We had to check her up twice by the doc because while she recovered after the first visit, days later, she took ill again and this time for worse.. In a few articles from now, i'd like to post on my experiences and some advice and information on a toddlers illness especially vomiting and diarrhea because i know how panicky a parent would get if she/she saw her child in a helpless state, and not only would the parent be panicking, the child would panic too.. :-)

Clothing and activity advice for parents of toddlers and babies

Thursday, July 16, 2009
Mommy's of the today's world, don't we know how much fun it is to be a part of the Babies and toddlers daily life as they go on to entertain us, and not to forget keeping us on our toes all day caring for them.

How do you feel when you watch your toddlers play in their imaginary world? doesn't it make us want to give them the best of all the toys in the shopping mall so that it helps to enhance in their motor and other development skills, or don't you want to see your toddlers get settled into a room filled with lovely comfortable Nursery furniture so that they are able to utilize their own space independently which will help them to nurture themselves into independent adults.

I strongly recommend you get your child engaged into activity centers which can provide a much needed breather for new parents as entertaining a new baby can be exhausting. These centers are designed to confine an infant to a designated space and allow them to explore and play in a safe environment.

New parents, remember your babies and toddlers are growing as quickly as you couldn't ever imagine with each passing month so it's advisable to select Toddler clothing which are a little large in size, go for button less clothes to snap of and on and which don't need ironing in a hurry.

Babies are naturally curious. Little hands and feet quickly find places they were not meant to explore. Babyproofing and home safety your home is essential to keeping your child safe and ensuring that you as new parents are able to maintain your sanity. It's important to evaluate your home for potential hazards before your child is crawling and walking. Many items can be safely moved out of a child's reach. Other items, like electric cords, stairs and kitchen appliances will need to be properly outfitted with safety mechanisms to protect inquisitive tots from injuring themselves.

Safety stair gates are very important if you have a crawling toddler because chances are there that the toddler can fall, so its safe this way to install gates at the top and bottom of the stairs.

How to clean babys gums and teeth

Tuesday, June 9, 2009

It is important to clean baby's gum's or teeth from its early baby days because like kids and adults, teeth plays a huge and important role in a baby's life too, as it helps the baby chew its food and form words while speaking. Its also effects the baby's jaws in growth. Healthy teeth= a happy healthy baby :-)

You can start cleaning its teeth few days post the birth. Take a soft wet cloth, wrap it around your finger and wipe your baby's gum's after meals and feeds. This helps to remove any plague left over from eating. Make this a routine which will help the baby get accustomed to the cleaning and will help in the brushing of their teeth later on. Also help in the dental visits.

Once the baby is 1 year old, you can start using a brush with soft bristles and a toothpaste which doesn't contain fluoride. This type of toothpaste is safe even if the baby does swallow some of it.

Benefits of Breastfeeding Your Baby

Tuesday, April 21, 2009
This is an article that i saw in the BBC Website and i think it will be helpful to share it here.

The longer a mother nurses her baby, the better for both of them
Dr Eleanor Bimla Schwarz
University of Pittsburgh

A US study found women who breastfed for more than a year were 10% less likely to develop the conditions than those who never breastfed.

Even breastfeeding for at least a month may cut the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

The research features in the journal Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The study adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting breastfeeding has health benefits for both mother and baby.

Research has found that breastfeeding reduces a woman's risk of ovarian and breast cancer and osteoporosis in later life.

And the list of benefits for the baby is long, with breast milk credited with protecting against obesity, diabetes, asthma and infections of the ear, stomach and chest.

The latest US study, by the University of Pittsburgh, focused on nearly 140,000 post-menopausal women.

On average, it had been 35 years since the women had last breastfed - suggesting the beneficial impact lasts for decades.

As well as cutting the risk of heart problems, breastfeeding for more than a year cut the risk of high blood pressure by 12%, and diabetes and high cholesterol by around 20%.

Fat stores

It has been suggested that breastfeeding may reduce cardiovascular risk by reducing fat stores in the body.

However, the researchers believe the effect is more complex, with the release of hormones stimulated by breastfeeding also playing a role.

Researcher Dr Eleanor Bimla Schwarz said: "We have known for years that breastfeeding is important for babies' health; we now know that it is important for mothers' health as well.

"Breastfeeding is an important part of the way women's bodies recover from pregnancy.

"When this process is interrupted women are more likely to have a number of health problems (including heart attacks and strokes).

"The longer a mother nurses her baby, the better for both of them."

In the UK, the Department of Health recommends exclusive breastfeeding for six months.

June Davison, a cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: "Breastfeeding has long been thought to be beneficial to baby and mother.

"This research suggests that it might have also have heart health benefits for mum too.

"However, it only showed an association between breast feeding and these health benefits. We will need further research to understand why this is the case."

Herbs and Breast Feeding - How to increase your breast milk supply

Friday, November 14, 2008
Ayurvedic Herbs can increase breast milk production. Besides medicinal plants, there are lifestyle suggestions that were known in the ancient system of holistic medicine. Herbs have been a staple part of life for us as human beings. Unfortunately the more modern our world becomes the more distant we become to what’s been naturally provided to us on this earth in order to successfully sustain life. Opposing drugs is not the focus of this article, but rather an approach to increasing breast milk production naturally through the use of herbs. Using herbs to increase breast milk can have positive effects for you and your nursing baby.

There are two popular herbs that are being used regularly to help nursing mothers overcome how to increase breastmilk production. Those two herbs are Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle.

Fenugreek:

* Fenugreek is a common galactogogue. A galactogogue is a substance that increases secretion of milk. Fenugreek usage dates back to ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. The primary use of this herb was to combat problems that women were often faced with, one being breast milk production in mothers who found it hard to produce adequate breast milk for their baby.
* Fenugreek seed sold today is usually ground into a powder and placed into capsules. This form of Fenugreek can be purchased for a reasonable price at local herb stores.
* The normal dosage for Fenugreek is 3 capsules taken 3 times per day.
* Fenugreek primarily helps mothers to produce more milk by stimulating the glands that produce sweat. Being that your mammary glands are essentially sweat glands, it’s no mystery how this herb is able to assist towards increasing breast milk production.
* Fenugreek works best when breast milk has been emptied completely from each breast, which can be accomplished by breast feeding or using a breast pump.
* Results vary from person to person, and may take some trial and error to see if the herb works to increase your breast milk supply.

Blessed Thistle:

* Blessed Thistle works by stimulating the mammary gland, and is considered to be one of the best herbs to increase breast milk production.
* It’s recommended that you take Blessed Thistle along with Fenugreek to achieve maximum results.
* The recommended dosage is 3 capsules 3 times per day. Blessed Thistle is also sold in the form of a tincture which can be taken 3 times a day, 20 drops each dose. Some tincture preparations have labels that state nursing mothers should avoid consuming the product mainly because it contains alcohol. There is no need to worry as the alcohol is in such minute amounts that it will only show up in small amounts in you breast milk.

Other herbs that may help to increase breast milk supply are:

* Fennel Seed – helps promote menstruation and increase mothers milk production
* Chamomile – has relaxing properties and helps stimulate the production of breast milk.
* Alfalfa – this herb is rich in amino acids that are essential to the body which some mothers may be deficient in because of their diet.
* Most of the above mentioned herbs can be purchased in capsule form or as a tea.
* Goat's Rue- The leaves stimulate development of mammary glands, and increase breast milk production and flow.
* Shatavari - is traditionally used by women for overall health and vitality and it promotes lactation.

Aniseed : Aids digestion and promotes mother's milk production for nursing mothers.

Caraway : This herb has galacagogue properties. Used to aid mother's milk production and aid digestion disorders.

Below are herbs to avoid if you are having milk problems or if you want to increase breast milk production.

* Aloe spp.
* Black cohosh
* Buckthorn
* Cascara sagrada
* Cocoa

Breast Feeding Tips and Guidelines

Sunday, June 29, 2008
Breastfeeding has many advantages for both the baby and the mother. There are many substances in breast milk that can’t be found in cow’s milk. More so, there are fewer complications associated with breast milk than with cow’s milk.

It has been advertised time and again that it is best for the babies if they are breastfed for the first six months even up to two years. So why is breast milk so beneficial for the baby? First of all, only breast milk contains colostrums which are essential for the baby to take. Commercially-made milks cannot simulate the colostrums made by a mother. The colostrums contain natural antibodies and immune globulins that are responsible for keeping the baby free from illness for the first few months of its life.

Another advantage breast milk has over cow’s milk is that it allows the mother to save as cow’s milk can be expensive. The baby can better adapt to breast milk. Their feces are not smelly and they don’t have any difficulty defecating compared to cow’s milk. Breastfeeding has also been approved to be one of the family planning methods that a family can observe.

Since breastfeeding has been given so much importance, many women have been made aware. However, despite the awareness, many mothers still report of breast problems associated with lactation. These problems are most often than not, associated with improper breast feeding techniques. In order to lower down the incidence of breast related problems due to lactation, it is important that mothers observe the proper techniques of breast feeding. Ultimately, both the mother as well as the baby will benefit from the proper observance of these techniques.

First of all, you need to prepare your breast for milk-production. There are various nipple exercises to perform in order to prepare your nipple to deliver the breast milk to your baby. One of these exercises would involve routinely pinching the nipple.

Second and what most mothers fail to realize is how to keep the nipple clean before the baby latches on to it for feeding. When you plan to breast feed, you should avoid using soap on your nipple. If this cannot be avoided, your nipple should be wiped using a soft cloth soaked in clean water to make sure your nipple is clean before your baby feeds from it.

Third and perhaps the most important step is to allow your baby to properly latch on to your nipple. You will know when your baby is latched on properly when your baby’s mouth covers the entire areola and not just the nipples. It is essential that your baby should latch on properly so that he or she can properly stimulate the “let-down reflex” of your breasts wherein the milk will go down the ducts and out your nipple.

To aid your baby in latching on properly, you should make use of their rooting reflex. This is manifested in the first few months of life. You stimulate your baby’s cheek, near their mouth using your nipple and their head will automatically turn towards the stimulation. Their mouth will open and be ready for receiving your nipple. Once you’re done, you can aid your baby to stop latching on by inserting a clean pinky finger into the side of their mouth and propping it slightly open. Your baby will stop sucking and you can remove your nipple.

To prevent sore nipples and breast engorgement you have to monitor the amount of time your baby sucks with each nipple. It is usually advisable to spend 10-15 minutes each breast to make sure that the breasts are completely emptied of milk. This will prevent breast engorgement. The next time your baby feeds on your breast, let your baby feed from the last breast he or she fed on. This will completely empty the milk on that breast before you move on to the other breast.

Breast Milk Helps Mental Development In Premature Babies

Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Study after study clearly demonstrates the importance and benefits of breastfeeding. Now, a recent study shows that premature babies who are fed their mother's breast milk show better mental development than those who aren't.

Many premature babies are not routinely fed their mother's milk and are instead fed infant formula. However, a recent study now stresses the importance of breast milk for preterm babies and urges that all premature babies should be fed theirs mother's milk when at all possible.

The study presented its report to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The study involved 773 premature babies who were born extremely underweight - less than 1kg (2.2 lbs) - Between 1999 and 2002.

The mental development was noted in infants who were fed breast milk and those that were fed infant formula. At age 30 months, an intelligence test was conducted on all babies. It found that the average mental development in those that were fed their mother's milk was more advanced than those that weren't.

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development backed the study and Dr. Duane Alexander stated that: "These findings strongly suggest that, whenever possible, preterm infants should routinely be given breast milk during their stay in the intensive care unit".

Another study backs up these findings. It found that preterm babies who were tube-fed breast milk had IQS 8 points higher than those that were fed infant formula.

Mother's milk contains DHA (docosohexaenoic acid) and AA (arachidonic acid) which are known to contribute to brain and retinal development. Also, Nature has seen to it that the milk a mother produces for a premature baby is different than one delivered at full term. Among other things, premature breast milk contains higher levels of Necrotizing Enterocolitis, which helps to prevent serious inflammation of the bowels.

It is also believed that premature babies who suckle at the breast suffer less from stress, which in turn leads to a reduction of other physical ailments.

Premature babies that are fed their mother's breast milk leave the incubator sooner than those fed infant formula.

Breast milk is a wonderful, organic and intelligent food; it constantly changes through the months and years of a child's life - its constituency changes throughout the day and even during the feed itself. It changes in order to deliver the correct dosage of nutrients a growing child needs. It is by far the best way for a mother to not only nourish but protect her child.

Until recently, breastfeeding was often overlooked with premature babies. Now more studies are showing just how vital preterm babies are fed their mother's milk. Not only can it significantly increase the development of the child, it can even make the difference between life and death.

Baby care and feeding

Thursday, June 5, 2008
Welcome to motherhood. It is a sense of pride and privilege for you to have a bundle of joy in your arms. Those nine months are over, but here begins a new journey for you and your baby. If it is your first time, make sure you have all your questions answered. Do not feel embarrassed or wonder what you should ask or if complain about a pain. Give it out whatever it is.

Care taken during pregnancy is known as prenatal care. Once you know you are pregnant consult a doctor immediately. The prenatal care advice is given by the doctor, midwife or the consultant. Once you know you are pregnant consult the doctor immediately so that the right medication begins.

Make sure you attend all the classes structured for your prenatal visits, even at the time when you are feeling fine. Because it is very important to know your internal condition and the growth of the baby. When you are pregnant you will experience constipation, morning nausea, headaches, heartburn and stretch marks. Frequent urination also occurs as there is tremendous pressure on the bladder by the uterus. Even though the bladder is empty the pressure causes the feeling of urination. Do not control yourself, give in whenever you feel like urinating.

Once the baby is delivered it is the decision of the parents to breastfeed or bottle feed. Make a choice to benefit the baby and you. It is observed that those who breastfeed, their babies have less risk for developing diarrhoea, asthma, diabetes, allergies, respiratory infections and leukaemia. To the mother, breastfeeding helps in faster recovery, faster reduction of weight and reduces the risk of breast, ovarian and uterine cancer.

Before you feed your baby look for signs telling you that your baby is hungry. Mouth wide open like a yawn with the tongue sticking a bit out, constant flutter in the eyes even though they are closed, lip smacking are a few of the signs telling you the baby is hungry. Crying is a later indication when the baby is a bit older. When your baby cries it is very important to calm him or her down and then feed.

It is important to burp your baby when feeding is done. Often air goes in as the baby is feeding and hence it is important to remove the air out. You can keep the baby over the shoulder and pat the back slowly. You can also keep the baby in a sitting position and support him or her with your hand and pat the back is another way. If your baby does not burp you can continue feeding. But always consult your doctor before you make your own remedies.

Tips to stop a baby from crying

Friday, March 28, 2008
You've tried everything possible, rocking, cuddling, singing, walking but nothing seems to interest your baby. Now what? you are already so tired and frustrated, you could yell your lungs out! But hey wait.. Babies tend to get moody and bored just like adults! They need that constant attention/checking or something to divert their minds..

Always keep in mind these tips below

Isn't it normal for babies to cry?
Of course it is normal. They also need to say something, don't they? Its their way of communication, they need you to understand them but sometimes parents don't understand their babies needs, and things get worse.

He may need you to check his basic needs
He maybe hungry so try giving him a feed. That dint work then he could of messed his diapers, check that out from time to time as babies hate being soiled and wet. He could have been overfed, burp him. Put him on your lap or shoulder and slightly rub his tender back. There could be the possibility of illness.. call your doctor for advice.

Try something different to divert baby's mind
Go out in your garden and point out to the birds, trees and anything that attracts his attention. Imitate the sounds of the birds and other animals for him, while making faces. Put on your TV(any kids channel), some amusing music, you hairdryer or the vacuum would work the best. Let him hear the noises and he'll start to wonder what on earth is that?

Leave him alone for a while once you checked on all his basic needs
Sometimes babies need times for themselves, they need to discover their own world. Leave baby cushioned alone in a safe place and attend to the chores near him. Maybe he'll cry for a while and stop but don't forget to keep checking him every five minutes.

Baby should be amused by now.. you've done everything possible to quieten him and you deserve his laughs. Why not play peekaboo with him?? My baby loves this game:)
