Thyroid hormone may boost in-vitro conception It’s a discovery that may hold promise for countless prospective parents unable to conceive naturally.

Canadian researchers have found that adding thyroid hormone to bovine eggs during the early stages of in-vitro fertilization can greatly increase the survival rate and health of embryos.

The researchers determined that euthyroid pregnant women with positive thyroid antibodies developed impaired thyroid function and had an increased rate of miscarriage and premature delivery.

“It is a very important idea that women with even the mildest degree of thyroid disease should probably be treated. This gets into the whole issue of whether women who are pregnant, or those who wish to be, should be screened for thyroid disease. This paper by Negro et al is so powerful that many physicians are screening women,” Cooper said.

Many doctors believe that antibodies alone are NOT reason to treat someone with thyroid hormone. This is despite the fact that the presence of antibodies alone can cause thyroid-related symptoms, and have been shown to affect fertility or the ability to maintain a pregnancy. (An article in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, August 1997 states, "the risk of miscarriage is twice as high in women who have antithyroid antibodies than in those who do not..." and Obstetrics and Gynecology 1997 Volume 90:364-369, states "the risk of miscarriage is higher when a woman is positive for antithyroid microsomal antibody...")

Doctors don't know if testing or treatment will do any good

WASHINGTON - Even a slightly underactive thyroid — too mild for symptoms — during pregnancy might trigger premature birth and babies born with lower IQs. But doctors don’t know if treating a symptom-free mother would help.

Now the National Institutes of Health is beginning a major study of pregnant women to find out, a key question amid growing debate about whether more mothers-to-be should get their glands checked.

“It’s all up in the air,” cautions Dr. Catherine Spong, pregnancy chief at the NIH’s National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
“We don’t know that treatment is going to improve the outcome.”
